Changing the topic a bit.
What do you guys do for work.
the attached series of pictures shows the highlight of my career as a construction site superintendent.
I spent 31 months on site as structural Superintendent building Vancouver house.
I should add that I’m a red seal carpenter, now closing in on 35 years this coming May 2021.

Who supplied your rebar? and concrete?..

How many meters total did you do?. What did the raw structure cost per square ft?

Did you hit a floor per week turn around on the tables and lastley who formed it?

I have had a long and differing career. 22 years in the Navy, worked construction for a little bit after i retired. Started back in the dockyard as a stationary engineer, retired again lol. Moved to PEI for 8.5 years, did some part time Dairy farming for a neighbour, Then a mechanic/Stationary engineer for a chemical plant, also did 3 summers playing Mathew Cuthbert, (Anne of Green Gables) live theatre at a local tourist stop. Moved west again to the north Island as a Shift engineer at Nuecel Cellulose. from there to Kelowna as a shift Engineer at Sun-Rype. Now retired again living in the West Kootenay's

There was 29,000 m3 overall from raft foundation to roof slab.
Carion was our forming contractor
LMS supplied and installed the reinforcing.
we were 8 days slab to slab to level 39 where a chunk of the core dropped away after successfully vertically post tensioning. Core was a beast at 170m3
32 columns along with 2 large shear walls that produced columns as the structure grew east meant a 1 day vertical was not possible.
at level 46 another potion of the core dropped away and we stepped down to a 6 day cycle with the core still broaching 120m3, .
$300 million overall

This building is very unified in that it has a spine
, It is vertically post tensioned to level 36 with 11 stands 3” diameter from underside of raft, 85 feet below street level to level 36.
The structure from level 23 was built out of plumb ~ 20 mm floor over floor to the west to compensate for the weight of the superstructure growing to the east.
It is anticipated the structure will find its equilibrium in 14-20 years
the structure was also placed on the lot considering a detailed study of plate tectonics here on the west coast., meaning that we know which way the earth is gonna move if there is a big earthquake.
it has a better chance of being hit by a meteor and falling over vs falling over in a seismic event .

Rally driving for a bunch of years in the 80s.
Then moved to Vancouver worked at Canadian Aircraft Products, Helicopter Welders, Canadian Helicopters in repair and
maintenance, a few more smaller helicopter operations, when after getting out of the aircraft business I got hired at a car

I only got the millwright because there was an opportunity to get it. Way easier than electrical school too. As for hourly wages having 2 tickets isn't a big deal but having it on a resume and potentially being shortlisted for a job you want is the real benefit. I've also done a few night courses for PLCs, VFDs etc. but again just for the resume, it looks better when I can say that I have hands on experience doing all these different things and I supplement that with some extra basic knowledge classes.

You must be retired by now. I’m sure the O44 madill has been around since the 80s. Where I started out we had a madill steel spar I think it was a 009, 2 044 swing yarders, 1 144 interlock and an 046 long line for yarding. We’d run the madill tower in the winter and the 046 long line all summer. The long line seemed like it stayed in the same spot for a couple years without moving up on top of some mountain somewhere.

For loaders we had an 075 madill snorkel and a bunch of juice machines. We had a contractor who showed up with an old tl-6 now and again.

And no highway trucks. All of the hauling was done by old 849 and 850 kenworths. I think most of the fat trucks are gone, if not all of them.

I have some pics of my brothers truck down a bank upside down with a load of logs sprawled out all over the place. I’ll see if he doesn’t mind me posting them.

Hell ya who was structural engineer and who did the concrete testing great job man!!!

How many floors where finished before you poured the roof?? How long did it take for the top slab pour did you use a cycling pump or did you crane the mud.?

Pretty cool man... did any one drop anything big?

You shoud be proud.

Who supplied the mud down there and whats the price per m3 ,in van these days...on rainy days did you just pour and grind after or did you flood with agilia after...

Something of that volume i would have bought the steel from china and a bender and highered the sub install crews direct..and paid heavy... i mean if i was in that buisness.

Currently I’m a BC Coast Pilot (ships pilot) love my job, but I’m kind of a goofy bugger I like to work, been a Pilot for 7 years,

Ive worked on the water my whole life and can’t imagine working elsewhere, I started as a Commercial Fisherman and thanks to Bogman (Eddy) he gave me my first opportunity as Captain and I’ve never looked back, from there I went Tow boating and thanks to Dutch (Mike) for pointing me in the right direction I became a pilot.

Yes but how many days a month does a pilot have to work good sir???

Yes but how many days a month does a pilot have to work good sir???

Really depends on which month/year as it changes each year on a 4 year cycle, we work 20 days on 10 days off, 20 on 10 off, 20 on 30 off, 30 on 10 off and once a year we get 52 days off......and we keep no scheduled hours I can work 12 hrs today and by 3am the next morning I'm working another 12 so....in the end we work about 7 months a year.

One good thing is I can tell you what days I'm working for the rest of my life ! Don't believe everything Alex tells you !!!!

I'm a machinist, started in a shop in Langley in 1993 after moving down here from Valemount as a 19 year old looking for work. Ran turret lathes in the first place I worked, then was hired at a bigger shop because of my experience on those old machines as they were a dying breed by then. Moved onto working on manual milling machines and regular engine lathes and eventually onto CNC stuff thru my time at that shop. Couple stops at other shops since then and still doing it. Been at my current shop for almost 17 years, now programming and running 2 medium sized lathes with 21" chucks and a smaller machine with a 12" chuck as well as a CNC mill. I've made parts for the space station, Boeing aircraft, Kenworth, BC Transit, and a multitude of other areas in forestry, oil and gas, medical, mining etc over the years

Started pipelining at 17 for a few years
then did a mix of log peeling and electrical for a few more years
then got into Wildfires in the summer and heli-logging in the winters. Did that for a few years and loved every minute of it. Even worked at a 2 man swingsaw mill in between seasons to keep busy.
Then I got tricked into aviation , Got my AME license and have been working on helicopters for the past decade. DOM for a small operation now and recently started getting into doing fixed wing work on the side.
The dream is to start rebuilding supercubs or 180's ... but we will see. Aviation took a massive dump this last year. Might have to go fire that old double cut back up and cut some boards if it gets much worse

Red seal welder for the last 12 years, mainly oil and gas though I did a short stint in PG where we built steel tub bridges. Now I work for a company that designs and build industry leading sand filtration units.

Hoping to pivot that experience into a position off the tools soon and work towards my Blue seal and project management certifications. I also finished my basic firefighter NFPA certifications last year, so part of getting off the tools is to get out of an unhealthy trade and get back in shape so I can apply to fire depts.

I'm an RN. It's a surprisingly good career for an outdoorsman. I have work anywhere I go, a strong union, all the OT I want and I do well enough to comfortably support a wife and 4 kids. Plus I can honestly say that I lay my hands on people and they live when they would otherwise die. Makes me feel pretty damn good about how life's working out.
