Hey guys and gals, looking for advice on what you may be doing to make you're ATV exhaust quieter. On my last trip i seperated from my buddies and later in the day we ended up in the same spot. The first thing they said was we could here you coming from a long ways away. I have a 2017 Honda Rubicon and I drive anywhere from 6-12km an hour when hunting.

Looking into the silent exhaust add-ons and its all over the board, from it works great, to don't buy it doesn't help that much.
Is there a better exhaust add-on out there? Ive heard of Kaplin and Silent exhaust, or something like that.

Thanks

You have two postings the same.

As far as exhaust, don’t waste your money. And don’t worry, your buddies machines are noisy too.

And animals are more used to hearing a machine than your foot steps in the bush

I like the Kolpin Stealth exhaust (adds an extra muffler) on my RZR 800. Couldn't talk to the passenger before, now I can. On my iPhone sound app it lowered the decibels by 7 at 3,000 rpm up by my left ear. Huge noise reduction as decibels are logrithmic in scale. I was able to put the spark arrester from the RZR muffler outboard at the tail of the Kolpin. Still works fine after 7 years of use, but did repaint it 2 years ago as it was getting rusty.

I have a Kolpin Stealth add-on muffler on my Honda Rancher 350. It made a difference and my Honda wasn’t that noisy to begin with.

I often thought about getting one of those but most reviews say there's barely a difference between the before and after.

Couldn't be happier with the Silent Rider atv silencer. No matter what you use, the animals will hear you but I do believe they won't spook as easy with a quieter noise. I wouldn't think twice about purchasing one again.

Devils Advocate Here

Has anyone thought or wondered if the additional muffler would cause additional heat and back pressure that may cause engine (valve) damage

If you are having a noise issue, you may have exhaust leak. make sure all your inline gaskets are tight. Check to see if your timing is okay. Worse case scenario, blown head gasket.

Hmm mm you would be surprised just how far the noise from a well tuNed atv with good stock muffler travels..I can usually pick up the sound 4..5 minutes before the atv arrives..travelling slow not wot.....
I have seen the add on after market units..I too worried about back pressure..elevated temps...
Haven't need it in 3 at vs over 25 plus years.

The prier spooked animals will run but most animals will wait to see what it is.
I can hear those souped up side by sides 5 miles away. A honda 2 miles away. Bears run, mule deer wait and moose wait. Grouse land on the handle bars of my Honda. Hard to shoot there.
I like the guys who are yelling at each other to be heard and running in low range with the revs screaming. And they don't see anything! Go figure.
Drive into an area and walk around is the best way. You see way more animals.

And... let me tell you, speaking from experience, size 13's do not run all that silent or leave no trace... :(

Im just wondering what hunting skills does one possess when on a quad armed with a rifle with the hope of comming across some really dumb inexperienced animal. I dont think that a quieter muffler is the answer.

Walking is the most enjoyable way to hunt and get a better experience but it is still nice to have a more quiet machine to get to those spots.

I don't hunt off my quad but you still need to get to your spot somehow before you start walking. I can see the benefit of having a quieter vehicle to get there.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Sounds like I just might not worry about it for now. Like some of you mentioned, just use you feet, well I do a lot of walking/ hiking with a gun. Love it, but you need to get to a spot first, I don't want to walk forest service roads all day and you can see a lot of animals along the way.

Shouldn’t it be dark when your travelling to your spot ?

Lol, gotta love the responses of quietly sneaking upto game while in/on an atv/utv. While riding for fun, we can be heard a great distance off, kms distance. While riding on trails to get to hunting areas this is slightly less, but still a good km.

It is always nice to run across someone that is sitting on, or near the trail comment on how loud we are driving upto them. I usually comment: I guess 30m to a moose, 20 ft to a 4 pt mule deer, 25 yrds on a huge bear is not close enough. Yes some of these were shooters, and yes some of these were shot. Numerous times this has happened.

Moral of the story: don't worry so much about how loud you are, worry about how fast you can get the rifle ready to shoot the game you come across. Yes we put boots to the ground, and do walk ins after getting close to the area we are heading to, but it is nice to get a freebie once in a while as well. Which one of you wouldn't?

The kind of transmission on an atv makes a big difference to how noisy it is too. On my little Honda I can put around in second gear and keep the revs low. That in combo with the extra Kolpin exhaust makes my machine pretty quiet. I’ve come up on other people who have commented that they couldn't hear me until I was almost in eye sight and within a few hundred yards.

On the other hand, a buddy has a Kodak 450 with the cvt. He also has a Kolpin added but because he has to rev the machine up to get it to move I can hear him a fair ways off. His machine is a fair bit louder just idling too.

I’m not big on putting endless miles on my quad while hunting and for the most part I subscribe to the notion that you need to get away from the roads in order to find consistent and better quality animals. But I’ve also drove up a old spur with the idea of getting as far as I could then hiking to the timber. Once off the machine I only made it a hundred yards when one of the biggest whitetail I’ve shot got up out of his bed. I’m a believer the quiet machine in combo with the rain that day made it happen. While I would have rather got him in the timber I’ll gladly take a freebie.

I bet that high horse you’re always on is pretty quiet too.

Imagine how embarrassing it would be for an animal to be shot by a hunter in a Polaris, talk about being disgraced in the after life.

Hunting in a downpour isn’t fun but it sure covers a lot of noise and scent.

Not only are they noisy, they stick as well. If the game has to listen for the predator's sneaking up on them, a atv is a bit noisier.

MMMM tasty grouse, venison, moose and bear meat. I don't think they cared much on what vehicle I got out of, my Polaris rzr or the Ford. They were more worried about the bark of the 300 WM.

Again I have worked for numerous game, and will continue to, but a freebie is a freebie, and no one will ever complain about those!

Bahahaha!
Ya i hear ya. Didn't mean to sound like one of "those" guys. I just think that a muffler is not the answer for more success. I do agree that a silent atv would be just awesome for cruising around.
