This morning my 11 year old son, Cody, and I decided to hunt an area we saw a 4 point yesterday evening. We hunted a deactivated road through a nice cable block and then still-hunted some beautiful fir ridges. After about an hour of hiking, we ran into this 4x3. Cody made a great shot with his late maternal grandfather's 30-30 and took out shoulders and lungs. We've had an amazing season, with him passing on many little bucks as we pursued the big boys. Had a few encounters with some monsters with some intense stalks, but they were able to slip away. With the any buck season nearing to an end, Cody decided 'any buck' would now do. I deboned the buck and backpacked him the km and half or so back to the truck. Needless to say I am one proud dad. If I don't get a buck myself, this will still be my best hunting season ever. Next week Cody's muley doe draw starts, so hopefully he'll get his 3rd deer of the year come next weekend.

Congratulatiosn Cody - very nice buck there - Dana (Steve) you should be very proud as any parent would be of their child's accomplishments - the determination, the integrity, the patience, the character building existence you are fostering as a parent in your children is very very highly commended in my books - family values is running strong with you :) - the memories you are giving for Cody are lifelong and when he is a parent,a grandparent even a great garandparent inhis time he will be able to say "I remember this one hunting seon with my Dad ............. and it will become historical for him :) many ^5 from me to you

I can personally attest to the fact that dana does not care what his gear looks like:eek: Ask him what he uses to rub on trees to sound like a buck rubbing his horns;) Or ask him what the grey stuff on his binos are :D I could go on for hours but then again what do i care if dana is hard on gear it is not MY gear;)

Troutseeker

Staining the material???? Are you serious? That pack is made for hauling meat. You do know that it is machine washable right? I've had that pack for about a year and a half now and have hauled 2 muley bucks, a large cougar, a large bear and a mountain goat. Plus I've packed out over a 100 sheds with it. I like it alot! Once Cody gets a little bigger, I'll be buying him one too.8)

Steveo,
You think I'm hard on gear, you should see what my Sheep Hunters look like. The boot is tough and holding up but I think I've wore down the tread to about 10% left. Just found myself a smokin deal a couple weeks ago. Bought a pair of Heads for under $6. Heads were the original BC made Logging Boot. Hand made by a couple Italian brothers. Heads rival anything Viberg ever produced. They stopped making boots about 20-25 years ago. Mine are in mint shape. We'll see how long they last me.

Congrats Dana. The 30-30 is a great gun for a young person. I took my first muley at 12 with a 30-30, It too happened to be 4 pt.

Earlier this year I accompanied my nephew who took his first kill, a 3pt whitetail.

Lots of pride, and lots of emotion. Great memory to keep. Way to go.

Congrats to you and Cody! I was gonna stop in on my way through today but decided to burn on up the highway so i could go thru Mcbride at last light. I saw a few nice bucks on my way home, nothing too big though. Was Codys buck starting to stink at all?

dana

He had just a slight smell to him. Not enough to keep the tarsels though. He tastes awesome. Cody wanted fresh steaks tonight for supper. :)

Hey Dana is alot of that country up there that easy walkin, what I mean is I don't see any dead fall, alder, willow, grizzly grass, just a nice grassy slope and it even looks like you might get a good distance shot if all the trees cooperate. looks like it makes for some nice quiet walkin.

Brambles,
We have a wide range of Biogeoclimatic zones here. The slope Cody killed that buck on is drybelt IDF. Slopes are pretty steep (50-90% avg) but it can be pretty open timber to hunt. A 100 yard shot can be doable if the shooting lane was right. On average, still a 50 yard or less shot average. It probably is some of the best ground we've got here. We have tons of ground way, way worse like blowdown jungles, rhodo jungles, alder jungles, devil's club jungles, you name it we've got it.

Congratulations to Cody! That is a fantastic first muley. Good for you, Steve, spending the time with your son hunting. That's what it's all about. These days a lot of people tend to lose sight of that in the quest for trophy bucks. I can't wait until my girls are old enough to shoot their first deer.
