Beartooth wireless device experience?

I picked up a pair of Beartooth (www.beartooth.com) communication pucks off Craigslist yesterday. They are supposed to connect to your cell phone and enable texting and calling without cell service or wifi.

I don't care much for the talk feature but on our elk hunt in September we were in cell service and it was very helpful to be able to text back and forth silently. Supposedly 9 mile range for texting, subject to the same limitations of handheld radios-- line of sight.

Has anybody else tried them?
