Alright folks. I was extremely fortunate to take down a big il' Billie thanks to a friend and his father in law showing me the ropes. He ended up being a big guy and old.

Not being a hard core goat hunter my plan was to just euro him and get a rug done. Deep down I thought he deserved better. Lino in Castlegar did my CI and he confirmed the Billie was a very good one. Measured 10" and had no teeth. It kind of confirmed that this old brute deserved better.

So now I am going to get a mount done.

Just curious what you have either done or seen that you really liked. I am not doing a full body. Plan is head but I'm liking the looks the something that shows his should mass and winter coat better.

Pretty new to the hunting scene and have really seen many mounts so I'm hoping to learn from your experiences and opinions.

As always, appreciate your help.

Congratulations 10" is a very good Billy. Instead of a life size mount, many of our Goat Hunters had there Mountain Goats mounted like a Bear Rug you hang on the Wall. Head fully done and the whole Hide with Hoff's attached. Hopefully you skinned properly with Hoff's left on. Of course you need a decent size Wall but it truly shows all your Visitors what a magnificent and large Animal this Trophy really is.

Cheers

Do a wall pedestal

Friend of mine had his done as a shoulder mount. Looks great. Shows of enough coat. IMO the coolest part of a goat is the horns and goatee.

Wall pedestals are a good option along with 1/2 lifesize. The wall pedestals can show off a lot of that nice long hair and have a bit more 'body' to them than the standard shoulder mounts

Half mount it , only way to see the goats winter hide, leg pantaloons , body mass and also the beard.. you won't be happy with a rug..

Don’t forget to tan the hinds if you’ve still got them. Look good draped over a couch. Congrats on a wicked goat!

If you still have your goat. Do research on a good taxidermist.

Thanks everyone. Friend of mine showed me an example of a head and a wall pedestal and he also prefers his wall pedestal.

Lino has his shop in Castlegar. http://grifonetaxidermy.com/?page_id=1144
I was in the shop and the work he was doing looked awesome.
Gives me confidence that he actually teaches taxidermy as well.

Don't think I'll have any of the rocks added. Hide is off to the tannery so we'll see what is possible when it returns.

I'd included the pics of the goat. It's in my gallery but not sure how to share it.

Congrats on a beaut of a papa smurf!!

Like someone else mentioned already, half life size would look pretty good...and make sure that you keep the remainder of the hide as a throw rug.

Congrats on the goat, hunting them late in the snow is the best, like the live picture very cool to have.
Good luck on the mount with what ever you decide should look great with the late hide.

Don't do a rug. Gotta do at least 1/2 if it's a winter coat. You'll find room if you don't think you have it.

If you're wanting a euro mount... get a replica made.

Edit:

Ganders did this one.

Do a half mount. I did one on a rock. Goat sits at at 45 degree angle to the wall bedded on a rock with one leg hung over the edge. Ray Wiens did the work. Kinda big though if you don’t have the room

What's wrong with showing off the socks or pantaloons on a shoulder mount?

I sent my taxidermist this pic to do mine like this. I dont have the room in my house for half lifesize nor the budget.

I think another important note is send taxi lots of pictures so he has an accurate depiction of your goat looks, especially if he has to build up the nose.

Would be a shame to get a big, mature, horse face billy, and have the mount end up looking like a 3 year goat.

Another vote for a rug here.

Without all the ridiculous exposed felt (hate that on bears too).

No question that if I ever take a goat, it will be preserved as a full rug.

Interesting that you mentioned that as the first question that Lino had for me after drop off was to ask for a close up of my billie's face.

I thought the rug with the horns was cool looking. Steve Rinella did it with his goat as well. I don't have a wall to dedicate to the goat. Making a rug with two dogs will have them all over that thing. Rug with the horns and two kids is asking for an injury.

Room wise I think the pedestal and head mount is all I have room for.

I read a couple of the other stories and my seems epically lame for such a nice billie taken. I'll eventually type something up.

Just wanted to shout out for goat rugs.
Few seem to consider them as an option.

Goats are an Amazing animal.

King of the mountain in my opinion and should be displayed with respect and honor.

I regret doing shoulder mounts on mine.

If I could ever get super powers again my next Big Billy would be mounted on a rock, possible side wall or corner, front hooves hanging off as appearing to be looking down, watching every thing from its high mountain bed on a teedering outcrop.

Congrats on your Billy. For a first a 10 inch is a Cranker.

Cant be lame if you walked out with a 10" billy .... and I think it would be hard for any 10" not to go over 49" total and make the book.

And any book animal is definitely story worthy, in my opinion!!!

Definitely a half lifesize at minimum IMO. Shoulder mounts never do the body/shoulders of those big billies justice and make them look awkward. Every once and a while I see a pedestal that actually does do the goat justice, but its not often.

Theres a good thread on Rokslide about goat mounts/taxidermy that I'd recommend checking out. Before killing my goat this Feb, I didn't think I'd every lifesize an animal.. but that changed when I walked up to him and started trying to find a mount that did him justice.

If it's space and/or financial... could get something like this then get a 1/2, fullsize or shoulder down the road.

My first question looking at this mount is what happened to his feet?! Looks like a tragic leg-hold trap incident.

Lots of 10 inch goats dont make 49 takes a lot more then length you need good bases and weight held threw out the length.
Some areas of the WK do have good genetics for this so could happen.

To each their own. A half life size with feet looks just awkward to me.

I would consider full lifesize if I had the space for it. But I dont. I live in a decent sized house but it doesnt have a big open staircase where it would be displayed well.

Beautiful goat did you have it scored.

Never did get him scored. He was over 10" on one side and a bit chipped on the other so just under 10.

When I did a rough measure he was 50+ but then there is a deduction for the imbalance.

I was kind of curious to get an official score but never did.

It was.

The CI hadn't seen a goat that old taken in our area. I think I got very lucky.

It was late season. I think it was taken in mid to late late Nov but can't remember the exact date.
