View Full Version : The biggest threat to wild Pacific salmon is Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Thirty years ago, the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) mismanaged the Atlantic cod fishery into near oblivion — ignoring the scientists who foresaw the collapse.

Instead, DFO rigged the science to support an unsustainable commercial fishery. Politicians vowed “never again,” and enshrined the precautionary principle into law — always err on the side of caution — but did nothing to reform the institution responsible for one of the world’s greatest self-inflicted ecological disasters.

Today, DFO does whatever is necessary to support Atlantic salmon farming (https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-scientist-at-department-of-fisheries-and-oceans-says-ottawa-is-too/) along B.C.’s coast — to the significant threat of wild Pacific salmon. Only Canada allows the farming of Atlantic salmon on the migration routes of wild Pacific salmon. And, just like 30 years ago, DFO continues to rig science so it can skirt its primary duty to protect B.C.’s iconic keystone species.

The DFO and the government will procrastinate and lie to continue the destruction of our wild salmon. There are soooooo many more important things to worry about.............

Does anyone remember “Vision 2000” in the early 90s when I was still commercial fishing !

Our wonderful government sent one of their lackies to a United Fisherman and Allied Workers Union meeting to lay out the licence buy back program and told everyone to find a new career as we need the (TAC) total allowable catch to negotiate land claims with First Nations, and look how that’s gone.......decimate the Commercial Industry that supplied thousands of jobs to hard working BC families and now not even the First Nation can make a living with fishing of any sector, they have MIS managed the west coast salmon stocks so bad just save face it’s appalling but not surprising !
So anything to do with fisheries from coast to coast that’s gone sideways is just another typical mismanagement of Federal Fisheries and is of no surprise.

This is typical of contemporary governments across Canada, and is getting worse. I have my own opinions on WHY, but, am too old and ill to give a damn any longer.

I sure do not envy the youth of today, given this situation.

Sooke sportsfishermen have been pen holding Chinook smolts and then releasing them.No studies or politics involved, just a few guys who decided to put more Chinook in the system...this year they had good returns. We need more ‘doing ‘ and fewer ‘studies’
what’s particularly galling to sooke salmon fishermen is about 98% of our catch are US hatchery fish...but we have to abide by restrictions based on wild Fraser River fish..

I have been saying this for years Nog ...DFO is not a good or proper steward of anything..This whole Govt Ministry needs a complete overhaul ...East coast needs to run the East coast and the West needs to run the west coast ...Non profit and science based ...Funded by govt ...Dennis

DFO continues to rig science , Is that the same as saying the DFO is lying?

, Is that the same as saying the DFO is lying?

Yep. And that is entirely unlikely to change for the foreseeable future.
