Well this morning was open season for bull moose in my neck of the woods. Since wednesday the trucks and campers have been pulling in non stop, all gearing up for the hunt.

This morning found me and my buddy heading to a meadow that i like to call "OL FAITHFULL". We split up for the first part of the hunt to see if we could spot anything on our walk. We then met up and aggreed that it was to noisy of walking so we would head to this ridge to set up and do some cow calling.

When we got there the wind was at our backs and blowing straight down the draw that we would be targeting. Oh well what do we have to lose. I let out a series of cow calls and looked at my buddy and said damn i sound good this morning. I sounded so good i let out another series right away. I then started to scan the area and what do i see... Running in as fast as it can a beauty bull moose. I told my buddy to get set up because the wind was going straight to it and he wasnt going to get much closer than 200 yards befor he smelt us. well i was right at three hundred yards he froze. nose up in the air. I asked my buddy if he was comfortable making that shot and he was. He took his time and let one go. I was very excited to see the bull collapse instantly. but it then started to drag its back end into the trees. We saw that it hadnt gone far. So high fives all around and then we started making our way down to find it still alive. i ended up putting one in it to kill it and then the work started.
I know what you are thinking. I broke the rule of shooting a moose down hill. and now having to pack it up hill. actually my buddy thought that to. he said "ohhh man im not looking forward to that pack. Well come on now. im smarter than that. there was a road that came up from the bottom and i was able to get to within 400 yards of the moose. we radioed my dad and his buddy that were out hunting close by and they showed up with there pack frames as well. we each did one trip and then i took one more and we were all done. dad and his buddy went for an evening hunt and i couldnt wait to come home and get the story on here.
hope you enjoyed

Congratulations on your moose! Nice going! Still, it looks like you had to do a bit of work. Nothing wrong with that.

We hunted down Nadina Lake way (6-09) for the Bow season (1st to the 8th) and came home diassapointed. We also had a bull draw, but we only ended seeing 4 moose over the whole week. and only one bull right at dusk.

Seemed either the rut was a little late, and/or a tough winter on the Moose? Last year we all had chances and even flung some arrows at them, hunting the same time, and same areas!

Talked to many other hunters who also had a tough time in early October this year.

Anyhow - good job. Depending on LEH results (or lack there of), maybe we will be back to try again!

Great to see you young guys packing meat!Helped pack an elk at age seven. Uncles used to carry 6 by 6 foot piece of canvas to put de-boned meat in, and then we'd lace it on the frame to pack. We always preferred pack frames such as yours, but sometimes had Trapper Nelson frames, which could tear your lower back to shreds if you weren't big in the shoulders. We cut a moose into six pieces nowdays and the loads look just like yours (if you have knees left LoL)
Packing is clean and tidy. And you can fly like a bird when that pack comes off!Great to see you guys on a good hunt. Best wishes to you.

I recognized your Dad from the pics you posted last year. I used to work for your Dad and Chris when it was NWPLT back in the late 80's. Chris reloaded a whole bunch of 3006 rounds for me and I remember going caribou hunting in Tweedsmuir Park (south of Ootsa) too. If I recall correctly your Dad got a caribou from the same area and perahps the rack is still in his house? Say hello to them .

thanks for all the replys guys. yeah it was a great day. for all of those that were asking about the pack frames they are camp trail freighter packs. i believe you can get them at wholesale sports. We also used to use trapper nelsons pack frames but if you have to pack any load for any distance deffinetly get quality frames it makes all the difference.
Hey steve does this caribou look familiar

You bet I remember that buck. It was the first shot ever out of a brandnew gun as your Dad and I were going to shoot it once we had daylight. Your Dad spotted that buck but since I had no scope on my gun, (I don;t think he had a deer tag either as we were hunting moose) and handed me his gun. I was comfortable with the shot, so I got grabbed my new gun and headed up that bluff from the back. Shot him from 15 yards or so.
Love that caribou pic! Those were geat times living in Houston as the fishing and hunting was awesome. Even though I am not too far from there I don't hunt it anymore as I suspect there is alot of pressure. Glad to see you guys are still getting animals on a regular basis!
