This scope http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?156195-Vortex-Rifle-Scope would be a great scope for a 45-70 the red dot has 10 different brightness settings, gets you on the target real quick.. Leopold VX-r scopes will do the same thing.

I use a combination of an XS Ghost Ring and a Leupold 2-7x33 depending on what I'm doing with the gun. I really like both options.
Don't have it set up with quick-release mounts but just swap it season to season depending on my intentions.

I've used red dot sights and cant stand them personally. Much prefer a low power scope with duplex reticle.

I’m running a Skinner peep for tight stuff, and have a quick detach mount for a Nikon 1-4x for 100 yards and up. The scope goes on and/or off in seconds and holds a zero every time.

My 1895GS just runs Ranger Point Precision fibre optic Cloverleaf on the rear and a skeletonized factory hood over fibre optic on the front.

I have my peep sight dialed in and use a scout scope with quick detach mounts as well.

Bush whacking I like open sights. Field hunting I wish I had a scope. Low light open sights suck. Especially on a big black bear.
Buy the best low light scope you can afford. A 100 or 200 yard shot doesn't need a z-z X 56 power scope.

This is exactly why I’m running a peep with a QD scope. Peep for quick and close, slap the scope on in 10 seconds for that “oh, there’s one across the slash” type shots.

Skinner peep for me

Did you go with the Express? I have those on both my Henrys, and his LoPro II on my 336BL. My 1895 GS is wearing RPP.

My eyes are shot for open sights. I went with a weaver scout set up on my 44 mag. Once I got used to it I really like it

Nothing under 33mm for low light. 4x40 is hard to beat. Price and light gathering.

The large objective low light thing is a myth. A 1x4x20 can be just as bright as a scope with a 56mm bell in low light

A friend of mine just put a hollosun reflex (I think it’s a 510) on his 45/70. He’s pretty happy with it so far. He just mounted it and made two range trips so far.

If it were my choice, i’d go with a red dot or a fixed power like the leupold fx series. I had one on my 375 H&h. before.

Not to threadjack but did you guys get the skinner sights locally? I've been looking for one for my custom MXLR and haven't had any luck so far, nor can I seem to order one from the states.

I ran a 4x fixed luepold. I like it but wanted to go back to the xs sight since its my peep sight trainer for my bigger rifles.both were good. I could only get 3 moa with the luepy and around 6 with the peep. thats just my crappy skills with peeps showig

I’ve got a spare Skinner LoPro II (dovetail mount) sitting on my bench. New in the package if you want it. Otherwise, you can order direct from Andy. I used one on my 336BL in conjunction with a receiver rail QD mounted Nikon 1-4x20.

VX-R 1.25x4 with Warne QD rings on mine. Easy on and off to use open sights depending on situation.

Anyone have a decent 3-9 x 42 in Leapold I would be willing to trade my vortex listed above + $$$ for the right scope. Pm me.

Out of curiosity, does the quick detach mounts keep the accuracy? My simple mind says it would be out of alignment. I have no experience with these mounts

Yes if you go with good mounts. I go with either Warne or Talley. I typically go with Talley screw lock detachable on my mountain rifles because I don’t like the levers sticking out and keep hex wrench with my spare scope so can replace damaged scope in the field with one pre-signted if need arrises. On my marlin levers that I run with detachable rings I like Warne QD in medium height and they work well for me. Others likely work well too, I just haven’t tried them as I’m happy with Talley/Warne

I have a red dot on mine. Works great on moving targets as you maintain FOV. Best to buy a good quality one.

I had no problem with on off on my marlin 95g or my blr - i used warne and leupold qd rings on warne steel base's those cheap weaver sh*t bases are junk ! RJ

A low power variable scope like a 2 to 7 or a 1 to 4 would be your best bet. I see alot of votex and Leopold in that range
