how far did he make it? looks like the 2nd shot was too high and would of hit above the spine/neck

what gun was he using?

pump him again??

how many shots you need at that range?

When Jim was with us last year, we shot an elk not much further than that and he ran 400 yards as the crow fly's.

well if your shooting a 1200lbs animal and unless you hit it in the head or the spine it is going to a few feet before it drops.

this is an on going argument I have with my hunting buddy. couple of years ago he shot a mulie buck with a 30-30 throughthe heart and lungs. Of course the deer decided he'd go for a little walk before falling. my buddy reloads shoots again - right through the guts! tell you it stunk

So I'm sure that this elk probably had good shot placement at that range so why waste meat or make a mess.
The one thing I discovered this year after shooting my elk cow (only half the size of this bruiser) is the shooting is the easy part its getting from the bush to the butcher were everyone earns their meat.

but all said and done excellent elk I hope you have a nice place to show that rack off

Jim: You should now tell the folks on this site how far of a pack it was so they dont think it is just a walk in the Park. I recall seeing your head lamps coming down the flat many late evenings and even you told us one of your elk took until 4 AM to get out. Great video DD

Good point tuchodi! All the bulls we took except for the one with all the broken tines were taken in a spot that takes us three hours to hike to, we try and leave camp by 05:30 so we are hunting by 08:30 or 09:00 or so, our shortest pack was five hours and our longest 9 1/2 hours (with the bulls) we call the place "no mans land" as most don't want to pack out that far. However that said tuchodi's camp has been in all the places we go and more.

Wow - you gotta be one tough hombre to hunt elk with this crew.

Now thats what I like to see...even though it makes me cry with envy. And I agree, pump 'em til you dump 'em, aslong as you can do so in a humane way.

slowkey

well if it's pump them till you dump them !
why are people hunting with bolt action rifles? Start buying those semi -autos and do it right in a humane way yeeehhhaaaaw

Very nice animal for sure. I love it when you can hunt in a remote area were there is no pressure ,animals come in a lot easier as the clip showed. I guess you are getting this elk head mounted ????. Have you had this set of antlers scored ,it would be interesting to know the final score on him ????. I and others sure would love to see some other pic after he was down ,do you have any others to post ????. Congrats on a fine animal,http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif.

My partner that took that bull did not take the cape out, doesn't have room to put a mount up, we didn't score it but I would guess 290 or so. Ramshot, Less than 200 days and we'll be back on the mountain, can't wait, hope to see you up there. DD

DD It looked bigger then a 290 bull ,I was thinking around 315 buy looking at the antlers in the film. You should get him scored I think you might be surprised.

you may be right as I am no expert on scoring, may have to do that as this time of year there isn't much else to do
