After being a loyal hunting partner and truly man's best friend for the past 12 1/2 half year it broke my heart to have him put to sleep.

He was having issues breathing I figured it was a bacterial infection I'll bring him into the vet and he will be better in a week or so. Well I was well off the mark on this one. Come to find out Marshall had the late stages of Laryngeal Paralysis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laryngeal_paralysis). I put him in the car while the vet was explaining what was happening and in the 5 minutes of her telling me what the cause and eventual outcome would be Marshall had an episode where he was overcome from the excitement of the trip to the vet and couldn't breath to the point his tong was turning blue and collapsed from the lack of oxygen. He had to be carried into the vet and be sedated, intubated and placed on oxygen.

The vet then came back out and explained what happened and that if it had happened at home he wouldn't have survived the trip to the vet. She then explained the options, the likely outcome of the options and his life expectancy if we went with any of the options she mentioned. Marshall was diagnosed with heart issues about a year ago and likely the result of the Laryngeal Paralysis getting worst as he aged. In the end the most humane option even though it killed me to do it was to have him put to sleep.

I am sure Marshall had an incredibly rewarding life, as we can tell from the pictures.
As with all living things, including us, there is a point when it's time to go.
I just hope when my time comes (and it could be sooner) I won't be suffering, rather get put down.
My sympathies, Otto

My condolences. I know too well, the pain and grief you must be going through! When I had to put down my 17 1/2 year old Brittany spaniel it was devastating. To this day when I think about her it can easily bring a tear to my eye.

It looks like you had some incredible hunts together! I bet he was a great dog to have as part of the family, as well. Cherish the memories!

I commend you Marc on making the right choice for Marshall rather than having him endure further suffering because of human selfishness as so often we are prone to do with our beloved pets. Marshall surly appreciates your decision.

Sunlight streams through window pane onto a spot on the floor…
then I remember,
it’s where you used to lie, but now you are no more. Our feet walk down a hall of carpet, and muted echoes sound…
then I remember,
it’s where your paws would joyously abound.A voice is heard along the road, and up beyond the hill,
then I remember,
it can’t be yours — your golden voice is still. But I’ll take that vacant spot of floor and empty muted hall,
and lay them with the absent voice and unused dish along the wall.I’ll wrap these treasured memories in a blanket of my love,
and keep them for my best friend until we meet above.
