View Full Version : First bear... what's wrong with his face???

Well I got my first bear today. I scouted this location many times in the past couple of weeks, figuring out the pockets and times where the bears appear and how to work the terrain for a stalk.
Things are finally coming together where I can spot a bear from across the valley, then make the trek to get into position without getting busted and keeping the wind right.
Today I spot this bear and decide to go for him.

After my trek into position, I'm looking around the clear cut for a bit where he's "supposed" to be, nothing.
Then I see fur moving, lower from where I had last seen him.
Look through the binos, I'm surprised to see what looks like dust all over his face. I figure he must have stuck his face in some dirt hole or something.
I look at him closer for a while, he looks like a male as far as a newb like me can tell.
After some cat and mouse, I'm about a 100 yards trying to get a decent rest in this mess of a clear cut, trying to aim upwards awkwardly and not get busted.
I'm not liking this rest, I skooch over to another log and I'm busted.
He stands tall on this stump to get a better look at me and exposes his chest. Boom! He falls like a sack of potatoes.

When I get to him, I'm appalled to see this

Needless to say this wasn't the same bear I had spotted.
After being weirded out, I get over it and get to work.
His hide seems fine, just a real case of buttaface.
Any ideas what caused this? Is it from him rubbing? Sickness?
The meat seemed fine but I'd like to know this is not some diseased bear.

Anyways, all in all I'm pretty happy, the meat seems good, and I'm on the scoreboard for black bear.
It's a 45min walk to where I left the hide & head, wondering if it's worth going back for.
Is a skull bleach similar work to a deer euro mount?.
What's the going rate to tan a hide these days?

Cheers,
MR

I do believe they are mites that infest while hibernating.

This isn’t uncommon to have happen in the den. Rubbed off face fur.

OMG. It's his internal spirit bear trying to get out!!!!!:-P

Seriously, thanks for sharing and congrats on your first bear. Not sure what that is? I've seen rubbed faces in early season but not like this. But it could be that simple. Call or email a regional bio.

Most often caused by mites in the den. Should be good chow.

I have seen some bears with some pretty bad mites but that's the worst I've seen personally.

Good looking bear other than the hair loss. Congratulations.

What weapon did you shoot this bear with? The chicken cannon from the Royal Canadian Air Farce?!

I’d at least get the skull and clean it up. Congrats on your bear!

Found this sow with her cub a few years ago. Image isn't the best but I'm fairly certain her face would look the same. Nice Bear, congrats!

Well after some reading, makes sense that it's either mites as you guys said, or it's the bald headed killer bear of Claire County!

Haha good memories

Don't plan on tanning the hide, but might go back for the skull.
Finished processing the meat and it looks and smells great. Even my wife who's been balking at trying bear meat is looking forward to burgers after helping me grind and bag. Kinda like beef.

If the trouble to get it is within reason, I definitely recommend getting it. You might really appreciate it down the road.

Looks like the birth of a monkey-faced bear.

In time he would have looked like this.....

The same thing happened to me. It started when I was around 26. One day I looked down in the shower and there was a few black hairs going down the drain. This continued for a while. Then I started to notice people staring at my forehead instead of making eye contact in conversation. Just like this bear, I woke up to a pile of black, luxurious hair on my pillow. RIP my bald bear brother. Enjoy the sausages.
