Above is some publicly available information / harvest data from 7-50 Tuchodi. Below is a summary of the trends:

1. Sheet Appear plentiful, lots of animals taken at decent success rates (I saw similar data for goats)
2. Elk and Moose are in trouble, (Elk more than Moose). There has been a recent decline in the number of games harvested, as well as the number of hunters in the area. On the bright side, success rates are down, but not by as much as the decline in kills

Just curious on peoples thoughts on the following questions:

1. Are wolves to blame for the pop decline in Moose / Elk? This is my guess, but then sheep seem unaffected
2. How reliable is the BC Gov data / self reported surveys? My guess is kills are accurate, but people "participating" is more subjective as some people target multiple species.
3. Do you believe that LESS people are hunting 7-50 now than 5 years ago?
4. If you had a crystal ball how do you think 2019 was and what are your 2020 predictions?

I am happy to run the report above for other MUs and species that are of interest. I will send over PM. I did the analysis above in preparation for a trip this fall.

Is this for the entire 7:50 or just the River and lake? Seems like the antlerless elk season has killed off a lot of elk

'On the bright side, success rates are down, but not by as much as the decline in kills' ???

less hunters, less kills, but the success ratio is what tells a story

What problem? Moose SR is similar to 5 and 10 years ago

i think the wolfs are a large part of the problem.
seen wolfs where i hunt wt and theres no wt left
at all in that area. i used to trip over them
now nothing cant explain it but like that every where
i hunt now hardly see a thing these days.

I think grizzlies are a major concern as well. We counted 13 different griz hunting up the prophet this year, thats an average of 1.3 griz per day - that must impact calving. We saw healthy wolf sign as well and shot 1 of 2 that we saw. Interestingly enough sheep and goats seemed plentiful.

All of 7-50

I have kills broken down by sex. Tomorrow I will respond with data. This data will show if cow elk LEH is the cause of elk drop in success rate. My guess is that you hit the nail on the head.

Moose success rates have barely changed over last 5-10 years (or less than Elk). Thus most of the problem, is cow killing, wolves and grizz pop could hurt as well but clearly not as much as cow killing.

I agree with this

also agree antlerless season has cause problems all over the province.

any idea bow 2019 went or 2020 prediction?

Everywhere that an antlerless season or uncontrolled female harvest has happened there has been a large population decline. It just keep repeating. The second factor is the population estimates are bunk based on flawed unsighted correctability models that keep being used because they don’t want to admit they’re junk. Garbage in garbage out.....

I hear both of the last two winters 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 were pretty good so there shouldn't be any big concern for winter die off. There has been an effort to reduce the wolf population in recent years so I can't see 2020 being worse than the past few years.

Here's my take on your questions:
1. Yes wolves are certainly a factor in the recent decade, anecdotally at least. You touched on cow elk LEH already, FYI 2016 was the first year of the LEH which coincides with the big drop in harvest numbers. Regarding sheep they are able to hide and escape from wolves much easier than elk and moose so aren't a wolf's primary prey.
2. I'm sure the data is only as good as the information hunters supply. I agree with what you say r.e. it being subjective. Just because I go hunting with tags for a bunch of different species in my pocket doesn't mean I specifically hunting them all. This is especially true in Tuchodi where there are elk, moose, sheep, goats, caribou, black bear, etc. Speaking for myself I only report the species that I am targeting on any given day.
3. No, probably more if anything. Biologist Bill Jex said the same thing at the 2019 sheep show.
4. See my above post r.e. a few recent factors.

Those cow harvest numbers must be way off with 100ish tags up for grabs each year?? Unless most of the LEH winners didn't actually hunt the area. Maybe I'm naive to how many animals are generally harvested relative to the number of LEH authorizations given.

We had one dead to rights last year but no LEH :(

Keep in mind most LEH antlerless tag holders for an area like the Tuchodi are going to primarily target a bull before they consider shooting a cow.
