Let's get this thing rolling. HBC is in desperate need of some hunting content. Let's see some past long beards, decoy set up etc. Been hunting these things since they were on LEH and our group looks forward to it every spring. I'll get it started.

Did some scouting in the WK last weekend. Little quiet and wasn't much for green up in the usual spots but this warm weather should have things changing quickly. Can't wait for next week!

Couple days away! Let's see some past successes and things like decoy set ups that could help people out. Normally we do a 2 hen, 1 jake set up but things happened fast with this bird and we only had time to get a single hen out before he popped into a small clearing.

I have hunted turkeys in the past with bow, rifle & shotgun but not in bc. Without giving away specific spots where would be a good place in bc to start looking?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Good luck to everyone on the eve of the opener! Hope to hear of a few guys connecting tomorrow.

Here's a double header from a couple years back. First one was dumped at 5yds which explains the lack of feathers ;)

I was out with my son. He arrowed a big longbeard this morning. Just finished pinning the fan, now making a late lunch before we out for the evening.

Kind of surprised to see dozens and dozens of “NO HUNTING” signs in the area I went today. Stopped and spoke to a property owner and he gave me some advice that seemed dubious. Then right after he said there’s a grizz in the area and to watch my back.

Congrats to your son Krico! You seem to be fairly successful annually with an early season turkey harvest. Hopefully you had a good evening hunt. Living through others vicariously :)

Me too so far. I'll be to roost some birds tomorrow night and hunting the next couple days.

Hope to see some successful hunts/stories start rolling in soon!

Chased them all morning, couldn’t bring them in close enough. Had an afternoon nap and set up hoping to ambush them on way to roost. Finally at last light the big boy came strolling in and I arrowed him at about 30 yards.
We are now eating pizza in the truck before we pluck and clean the bird.
sleeping in tomorrow!

Any advice on where to start? As in what type of call to buy? Are they tough to clean?

How does spring vs fall hunting for turkeys compare?

Had a pretty active day out there today. We knocked a couple good toms down. Action was pretty consistent all day. Will upload some clips/pics when I’m home tomorrow night.

Good stuff, looking forward to it. Speaking of an active day... that was me today, busting my hump up and down mountains. Saw pretty much everything but a turkey (or a black bear, which of course I have a tag for): deer, elk, moose, dusky and ruffed grouse, coyote, lynx, even snowshoe hare on the drive out. Might have to change regions...

Anyone else been out?
Here’s a simple foam Jake decoy we fixed up with an old fan from a Jake my son shot a few years ago, along with real wings. It even fooled me briefly when my son staked it out in between setups.
Next time I’ll attach some fishing line to add movement when he’s positioned over my hen decoy.

Great stuff Krico!

Got out for a couple days and had a blast. Weather was great and the birds cooperated. Here's one of our call-ins. My partner really wanted one with the bow so I held off while he was at full draw on these birds but had a little brush in the way. It was a rushed set-up as these 2 Toms came in hot and quick. We would kill them later in the afternoon.

Cool video. Typical longbeards lol. Just when you think you’ve got them, they change course and present no shot.

We had big toms inside 20 yards at least 3 times opening morning, each time playing out different but resulting in the same - no good shot opportunity.
Luckily my son stayed patient, didn’t rush anything and blow the birds out, and killed one by 10am.

Hey Wingman does your dog come along turkey hunting, or just show up for the hero shots?
Congrats, looks like a big Tom.

I bring him on the fall hunts when grouse hunting and the turkeys are a byproduct. He was a nice tom ( it's all about the camera angle ) one of about 5 Toms that I could have taken that morning but he was the first too take a walk about from the gang the others just would not break the huddle. Probably 40 birds in the flock.

I deep fried one of our birds on Monday. Today the last of it was made into soup.

So I drew a December LEH tag for 4-09; listened to the Hunter Conservationist podcast and it sounds like the intent of these tags is to reduce numbers on/around private property to help out local farmers and ranchers. Does anyone know who to speak to or how to get ahold of land owners who might be interested?

mikellini

Anyone? Just looking for a bit of help filling this tag. I've struck out on big game this year :(
