Just wanted some opinions on what i should buy for a new rifle for long range flat shooting? I have a 30-06 in all weather stainless but found it had too much power for deer hunting. Looking for something a little lighter like maybe a 25-06 in all weather preferably ruger......

A 30.06...too much? That's a first....I have used a .458 lot. My .02 cents? Anything smaller would be to small. Use barnes bullets.

Have a look at the 6.5x55, it has a darn good ballistic profile.

The 25-06 is hard to beat in a light recoiling long range rifle. I have 2 and looking for more. I shot a moose a long way off with 100 gr tsx. They are both exceptionally accurate with 100gr bullets around 3300 fps.

I had a Ruger M77 MkII in .25-06 witha 24" barrel that would produce 100 yd groups btween 1/2" and 1" with handloads. It liked 120 gr Speer bullets and IMR 4831 and H 450 with any old large rifle primers. And it liked Hornady 117 gr bullets second best.

bullet choice is crucial for any cartridge you shoot.

a 30-06 with some bullets will damage alot of meat. Going to a smaller cartridge loaded with a fragile bullet will lead to the same results as the 30-06. That being said its never a bad idea to buy another rifle :)

for deer, anything from 243 through 7mm-08 (include 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 6.5x55, 260, 270 Win, 7x57) will be all you'll ever need. My personal preference runs with the 6.5mm cartridges but any of the above will work great. In the smaller cartridges like 243/25 cal, you'll want to use a quality bullet like a Nosler Partition or Barnes TSX to avoid bullet pancake. 6.5mm, 270, smaller 7mms...all will work with almost any 130-140 grain bullet you can buy

My personal Fav is the 6.5x55 ...140 gr bullet ... Mine has the long heavy barrell ... Kinda a bear to pack while hikin thru scrub ... but worth it when you squeeze off the shot

a .270 is the only way to go, in either a .270 WSM or the old trusted .270W. It'll kill anything in North America as long as you put the shot in the right place.
My new A-bolt in .270 WSM is 1/2" at 100M right from the box and shoots so flat that bullet drop isn't to hard to compensate for.It kicks a bit but a muzzle break and a good recoil pad will solve that without to much $$.

A man can't have to many rifles. But you could load the 30-06 with a lighter weight premium bullet and get the results you are looking for. Check out the federal premiums if you don't reload. The lighter bullet well give you some long range reach and the noslar or barnes tsx etc. won't do as much damage to your roasts and steaks.
