Are there any other sheep counts, other then the Southern Okanagan this year? I was hoping to get out and volunteer this year, but family just decided to fly into town that weekend and from the look in my wife's eyes, I'll be murdered if I leave.

Haven't heard anything about Spence's Bridge yet but that was the beginning of April last year, think there was an earlier count as well.

Dates for Spences are not currently confirmed, but hopefully early April.

Kamloops Lake counts are running April 5th, for more info:

Annual Spring California Bighorn Sheep and Deer count along north side of Kamloops Lake from Rousseau Creek to Ord Road area. Doug will be at the turnoff to Fredericks road at 7 am to assign areas. BBQ to follow the count Dewdrop at the standard location. Contact Doug Jury (250-573-5570) for more information on areas and data sheets if you would like to start earlier.

Highland Valley Outdoors Association from Logan Lake will be assessing the area west of Rousseau Creek west to Cache Creek Contact Ray Town(250-253-9474), Highland Valley Outdoors Club.

I've attended the Spences Bridge area count several times and have always wondered why it's so late in the year.
Often the hillsides have already turned green enough that the sheep are up into the hills and out of sight.
Talked to local farmers and they agree...the sheep are in and around their farms, often in large bands, till just before
the annual counts after which they break up into smaller more dispersed groups.

Sheep counts are about helping our biologists keep track of local herd numbers while at the same time enabling folks to get out and enjoy the animals and the landscape they call home. They are also a great opportunity for collaboration between different user groups for the benefit of wildlife.

The day that doesn't matter will be a sad one indeed, although my outlook on things differs from yours entirely it seems.

And no I am not a protester, I just see your limited ability to effectively and proactively contribute to society as a whole, which is emphasized by your stupid comments and feel the need to point that out.

If you want to keep this thread on topic it might help to refrain from criticizing one of the most popular members on the forum because it makes people like me want to defend him instead of talking about sheep counts.

Srupp has contributed time and knowledge to more hunters on this forum than anyone else I can think of, and I can think of a few amazing people that have contributed a lot.

I was about to say this but you beat me to it. I personally have not had interactions directly with Srupp but I have seen how much he contributes and supports others on this site for quite some time.

I think some people need to just chill the f out and take some humor for what it is. Srupp is stand up and should not have to defend himself considering how much he has helped others over the years.

With that said, let's get some dates slotted and go count some sheep!

Fortunately, the number of posts a person makes does not correspond to experience when it comes to hunting. Unfortunately I don't think I would learn anything from srupp as he seriously hasn't said anything that positively contributes to hunting for sometime.

That being said, I will admit I fell into the trap when I reacted to srupps stupid comment rather than focusing on the sheep count(s) which is what I was interested in learning about when I first saw this post and to tdot I apologize.

At one time the April date was chosen to fit in with other weekend commitments/club partnering/conventions/pairing with other counts/predictable weather/gun shows/ ad nauseam
It is what it is and being consistent has its value in data collecting also

For sure Srupp does not need me or anyone else to speak for him, but as a junior member myself, I find Srupps one of the best contributors and most valuable sources for hunting on this site. Just ask and he is there (if not i the bush).

It corresponds to your credibility on this site.
First of all, I doubt you have 40+ years of hunting experience like he does.
Second, you've been a member here for barely 2 years. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Just because you didnt stumble across a thread where he offers advice doesnt mean advice wasnt offered. Again, maybe stick around longer and you'll see how wrong you are.

Hmmm couple years ago at the Spencer bridge.seen something that surprised me..a momma bear with 5 cubs..4 black and one brown one...all in a line headed up a draw...the last one of the line was a real playful shit disturbed several times jumping on its siblings back from a sneak attack both tumbling off the trail...scrambling back onto the lineup..only to do it again..kids. .certainly the 5 cubs was a first for me ever..and the antics made me laugh out loud...mother nature is wonderful at all times..but some times she just outdoes herself .
Hmm mm as for puddle pissed. .any ing. .but not his first snipe...unfortunately both Susan and I are sick..and I don't have the time to correct his incorrect views comment on indians set him off..Hmmm mm

Bring what ever you have and whoever wants to glass for sheep.

People are usually put into groups of 3-4 people per designated zone (so numerous people dont count the same sheep. I think there is a zone from Lytton up to lilloet. nothing else up the fraser.

Hmm the one year I was given the road a cross the Thompson towards Merritt. .didn't see any sheep but did see deer..
I find bringing a good folding chair..thermos of coffee. .extra cup for new friends..GPS. .pen paper..warm clothes especially. .LOTS of water.binoculars, spotting scope with great tripod..lunch.
Good hat.some years sunscreen was needed.
Its a good time to check out different optics being used and why..learn from more experienced sheep hunters..some folks like Dave have come up for years from Fraser Valley..Mission area..makes for a long day.but enjoyable.
They did provide an example of class 1 class 2 class 3 rams..so you could most correctly put your find in the most correct column to make the information more reliable/ use full for the biologists.

this venue is a wonderful idea for many reasons...accurate precise sheep count assists biologists...
However it helps new /newer sheep hunters...first hand actually team up with other sheep hunters to see sheep on the mountains.
Learn how to glass..starting off once a sheep is spotted for newer hunters finding that sheep.that helps your history of where sheep are..that helps you decide why they are there..bedded..so that's what one bedding area looks like for bighorn. .feeding areas ..travel routes why..?
Learning how to glass correctly..across. .up down..how to use binos. Then tear every square inch of your field of view with spotting scope.
As i said earlier..a chance to try different quality levels of glass..not others opinion. .you will get a chance to see the difference.
Guys who spend thousands on gear..lots of time for years WILL share tips they have learned over the years..helps new sheep hunters with the learning curve.
an important skill is shared many times that day..once one spotter has found a sheep..how to direct his hunting partner to the same sheep..having 2 sets of peepers on a ram helps with the identification, age.legality of any given ram....every encounter spotting helps you get better..a historic reference of sheep in your mind.
Helping you evaluate where to start looking..and why...
However a warning..sheep hunting is addictive..some say a sickness..lol and for many reasons sheep hunters are for the most part a secretive bunch..often more inclined to loan out their wives and their Visa Cards no questions asked..lol rather than share sheep locations..knowledge
however at the sheep count information gained through countless decades is freely shared..
New friendships with other like minded individuals are made..
All to help evaluate the number..class of rams..ewes and lambs...
and in the process help you...winners all the way around..

I have to admit that that right there is a large part of the reason I was planning to attend. It was all about learning. Learning what matters to the sheep, food, habitat, etc. Help the biologists make fact based decisions. Meet and talk to other sheep hunters, get some time spotting the critters.

Excessive paranoia???

Kidding. My wife is an ER Doc there and normally flies in for shift work. But as they ramp up to deal with CV19, she may no longer be allowed to fly and may have to be on call for the balance of the month. So with two infants on-hand, we'll all be moving as I can't ask her to be away from the kids for several months. Plus there is a strong possibility that many of the frontline workers in the hospital, will be at minimum put on Quarantine

Hoping that isn't the case, but we'll do what we have to do.

The sheep counts are cancelled. WSSBC has been in contact with local groups and they have requested we not come into their communities from around the province due to this covid 19 pandemic. WSSBC is working hard to build positive relationships with all groups that have stakes in wild sheep conservation, which includes land owners, locals etc etc. Sucks but it also makes sense and is the right decision.
