2020 Hunting And Fishing Play by Play

New year/new decade... let's see how this pans out.

This year has started of cold, as everyone knows. Friday night was fighting my mother's furnace... guess you gotta service it a little more regularly than once every 6 years. So got that all fixed Saturday morning. Then my step nephew Brickles and my brother decided we were going on a road trip to Quesnel for the day. Then Brickles' brother Young Jakey came up Saturday afternoon from Kamloops. Well that means we were going ice fishing on Sunday.

So last November this happened

Sunday we decided we may as well head out hunting anyways because that's what we came for. Headed up the Coquihalla into the snow... found a road that looked like it went up into some decent country. Not even a kilometer down the road, CV lets go... no more 4 wheel drive. We tried climbing the mountain, but it wasn't happening in 2 wheel drive. Short hunting trip and we got drive back to town in 2 wheel drive...

So turns out it wasn't the CV, but the transfer case is pooched. Apparently there's two types of transfer cases for a 97? tacoma. Electronic and J-Shift... needing the J-shift, they've been tough to find. So the go-to war wagon has been out of commish for a bit.

Sunday we had intentions of going to either "Dewar" or "Dugan" lake. We were about 2 or 3 kilometers from the turn off and the road was now longer plowed. We tried plowing through, but between champagne pow and lack of clearance, we weren't getting in to the lake. I was willing to make the 10km hike to the lake, but the other two weren't keeners.

We headed out and made our way to another lake. It's not a secret lake at all... so I've never fished it. Been there enjoying the outdoors by other means, just never with a fishing rod. But Young Jakey has always asked to go there, so we figured we'd may as well give it a go. Our uncle has spoken of this lake as well.

By the time we got there it was 12:30. We drilled some holes and got set-up. It was half hour before my brother seen a one pounder come swimming by his hole. Half hour later, we started thinking "maybe over by where people have been set up before might be better?" Plus we wouldn't risk losing a fish in the submerged trees.

Thinking the fishermen before us knew something we didn't, we went and punched a new hole. We got set up and we were ready. Nothing. It was about an hour after that, we finally had a quarter pounder with cheese do a fly by of our hole. We didn't have much daylight left to work with. Another one moved it and started messing with my bait. He swam away with the hook and and did a couple head shakes. Went to set the hook and the fish just swam away. Missed him. Right after that my brother hooked into a fish.

Now big holes are nice for big fish... but when your hole is 24 to 30 inches wide, smaller fish get tricky. I pulled a rookie move and grabbed the line and tried to beach the fish. No luck. I tried grabbing it by the tail and slipped out of my hand. So I went in with two hands center mass... squirrely little thing slipped out again. As it went to swim under the ice again I reached under one handed and hauled it out. The first fish of 2020.

Tried weighing him, guess my battery in my scale is dying. He's somewhere between 1oz and 24lbs according to my scale.

Shortly after we had another quarter pounder with cheese messing with my bait. Then all of a sudden he turned and hammered Young Jakey's hook. He got his feet shoulder width apart, toes pointed slightly out, knees bent and slight lean forward. I got his drag set and he beached it like a salmon. We had enough fish for dinner that night and were done for the day. Jakey was a little concerned with how the fish would taste considering the lake smelled like swamp ass. But it was a cold deep lake.

Baked them up. Did one fish in traditional salt, lemon pepper and dill, one fillet with a greek blend and one with a cajun blend. Sided with ceasar salad and roasted carrots followed by strawberry rhubarb pie with vanilla ice cream.

Myself and Beer-Radimus-Anus-Maximus-Decimus-Meridius are bornt 9 days apart. So last year, his woman told me to take him ice fishing so she could decorate for his surprise party. We went out in -30 whatever and didn't touch a thing. But little did we know it started a tradition...

It had been determined that last Saturday would be a day for ice fishing. So Friday, I made the pilgrimage up to B-Rad's at Douchie Lake. Schmyle Smashin and his wife Smashlee came down from PG. Friday night involved Rock Band, a Swedish dessert made of soda crackers and whipped cream and some game called Anomia... frig that game.

We knew Saturday was going to be a sleep in. I figured 9ish. B-Rad figured 7:30 was a sleep in enough. May have been later than 7:30, I don't really know. But it didn't take long until myself, B-Rad and his woman Felacio, Schmyle and his wife Smashlee were off on the Nazko road.

We got to the lake and unloaded everything. For some reason we had to go to the furthest point from our parking spot. B-Rad ferried people on his quad. I made the full hoof across the lake just to spite B-Rad's decision we had to fish so far away. I didn't complain out loud, but some others did. B-Rad assured us there was a reason we had to go all this way.

We kind of got everything set up. Some other friends of B-Rad's had met us there. When I seen the nuclear prawns... I thought maybe I'm out of my element. B-Rad likes to mess around with his scents and stuff, especially anise scents. Mostly because he calls it anus scent.

I think B-Rad's friend Bond brought it. B-Rad had some cotton candy pink bait that he brined in feta juice?? I just stuck with the plain jane raw white prawn. Schmyle saw me put my bait on and asked "bait that big really works?"

Well Schmyle you play a gambling game. You get lots of bites, but if you have the hook in the wrong spot... If the hook is coming out the tail and the fish bites the middle of the bait, you'll miss them. But if the hook is poking out the middle and the fish bites the tail...


As we were messing around... I looked over to the one they called Darrick. His rod was bent over...

His drag was loosened right off and he was quietly reeling away and not really getting anywhere. I watched in surprise for a half second before I could say "dude you got a fish on". B-Rad came running over looking down the hole... grabbing The One They Call Darrick's line. It made me wince a little watching B-Rad grabbing that line. I got The One They Call Darrick's drag set properly and he made short work of fighting the fish.

Obviously I had to ask him what bait he was using... turns out The One They Call Darrick wasn't using any bait at all, but just a lure... a glowing wedding band. Schmyle was making fun of me because all my ice fishing rules were being broken...

1 - No Bait (if you aren't allowed bait, what's the point of ice fishing?)
2 - Using a trolling lure (a wedding band!? Ice Fishing?! Really?)
3 - It was warm out (Should be about minus 20 or colder to catch big fish)

Shortly after my rod had line peeling out, however I knew it was a lost cause right away as the fish had the bait in it's mouth and not the hook. As soon as my fish was gone, Smashlee's rod started to vibrate. I think my fish left me for Smashlee. She wasn't able to get her hook set either.

It had quietened down again, and I was shoveling snow just because.

B-Rad had his rod laying down next to his hole. B-Rad quickly grabbed it and had a fish on.

The group of us ended up killing 4 fish that day. I'm not sure of the weights as my scale was still reading all over the map. But you can see the line just in front of my reel seat, from that line to the tip of my rod is 50cm.

I'm still not sold on the lake yet, even though B-Rad loves it. He complains about how much money he has to spend on fuel to get out there, but... there's gotta be lakes closer to his place with bigger fish. That are edible. Yeah Dragon Lake is close, but yeah...

There's fishing derbies popping up everywhere, but me and B-Rad are going to give the Sheridan Lake derby a go next weekend. I've never ice fished it, only soft water, so should be fun to have a neutral lake for both of us to ice fish.

Note: This past weekend I was informed that it had not been over a calendar year since I've caught my last fish while ice fishing. I did catch one a the end of January on Douchie Lake. However it has now been longer now.

This past Saturday was the Sheridan lake ice fishing derby. I've never ice fished Sheridan, only ever soft watered it. None the less. I can't remember the last time I was in an ice fishing derby that wasn't informal among friends. Maybe I never have.

Anyway, Beer-Radimus showed up at about 9:30 Friday night. After some other people bailed on us for various reasons, it was myself, Beer-Rad and his buddy... D-Mit would be heading out Saturday morning. Our plan was to be out the door at 5:30 am to be at the lake for 7. Beer-Rad blames me for being late (I forgot to plug my phone in and it died) and I blame Beer-Rad for being late (he took forever to deal with his shit). We made it out onto the ice at 7:30... so not too late.

Beer-Rad was doing some e-scouting on the lake and sending me all these different pins on spots he wanted to fish. My plan was kind of based on fishing sockeye on the Fraser. Find where everyone is fishing, then stand on buddy's shoelaces and then LOW HOLE THE FUC... I mean it was a fishing derby. We could fish where everyone else was fishing because it probably was the good spot. Or we could split from the crowd and find our own spot. We kind of split the difference. Beer-Rad realized that the pins he was checking out, without a quad or sled, we wouldn't make it to those spots.

We had a few bumps early on. Had a variety of bait going on. Beer-Rad was running his cotton candy pink shrimp with anise and feta juice. D-Mit was running some shrimp scampi on a pink jig head and I went traditional with a whole raw white prawn. I was in it to win.

It wasn't really cold, but it sure was windy. We never did hook in to any fish, but now I feel I gotta learn how to ice fish it properly. Doesn't take much longer going there over super secret "Dugan" lake and not as hard on the vehicle.

Since there's some shit fires burning on other threads... time for an update.

Friday night I stumbled upon some Pro Cure (Steelie Pink... or part# PC-O12) I had left over from slammin' salmon season. So I played around with dying up some shrimp and prawns. Prawns didn't take colour as well, may have to try the brine method instead of my usual "just sprinkle it on" method.

With bait all dyed up... well we can't let it go to waste. So Saturday morning I grabbed my brother and we headed ice fishing. I though with the warmer weather, we should be able to make it to "Dugan" lake. That turns out to be a hard no without sleds. The farmer has the road pretty much blocked off. Maybe next month I'll be able to get in.

We spun around and had to think of where to go. All the lakes were past the blockade. We could go to the swamp ass lake that my brother and Jakey caught some trout, or we could go to a cow pooh lake. The cow pooh lake has some big ass trout in it, but they aren't worth eating. But we decided to go there for some catch and release action.

We finally got to cow pooh lake. There was some sign of other guys fishing. No signs of blood, but the holes were pretty frozen over.

We fished just near the parking spot for a couple hours, thinking with it being so small that we should at least see something. But after a couple hours of nothing, my brother went for a wander. He drilled a hole and then came back over to me. He handed me his phone and told me to hit play. I thought it was a video someone had sent him, but nope... he took it. Drilled right into a whole ozzyozbillion of freshwater shrimp. We moved over there and fishing in the bait ball for another couple hours without even a sniff.

I don't know with this many shrimp in one spot, if the fish are too picky to bite, not hungry or if there's that many shrimp because there's no fish?

Winter kill is my first guess. Is the lake about twenty five minutes away from the town you live in and about 1km north of a major highway? Then about 200 metres east of a maintained road?

Winter kill is my first guess. Is the lake about twenty five minutes away from the town you live in and about 1km north of a major highway? Then about 200 metres east of a maintained road?

Headed out for a bear hunt with my brother. Spotted a bear, there was some humming and hawing about wether or not we wee going to take him. I told my brother I'm holding out for something huge. My brother figured if he could get it with his crossbow it'd get him some sausages and he had to head back to work. MY brother was cocked and locked. He asked me the yardage. I called 50. He let the bolt fly. Seen it disappear and the bear walked off. I knew the bear was hit, but a little high and the bear didn't do the classic spin and bite. We gave it a bit and went in. There was no blood where the bear was standing.

I figured with it being a higher hit, the blood may be just pooling in the chest cavity or the hide was soaking up blood. So we tracked down the bolt and there was good blood all over the fletching. So I went to where the bear was standing, I looked up the hill and figured, this is the direction he travelled and the easiest route of travel. The "trail" kind of cut across the trail toward a gully. Our luck I figured the bear would have tumbled or went to lay down in the thick cover... YAY

We cut across the hill a little and I looked down and seen him piled up by a tree about 30 yards below us.

The worst part of bear hunting... going up to make sure it was dead. Threw enough logs and rocks at it to make sure. Then I realized this guy was full of burrs. Good thing there was no intention of keeping the hide anyways.

Jakeskins my step nephew kept wanting to load the boat up to go to a different lake to fish because he wanted to catch fish. I told him to get in the boat. We anchored up in one spot, gave him a couple pointers on casting and how to properly retrieve a damsel fly nymph. He ended up hooking into this 2.5 pounder.

Took Jakeskins fishing the one day. We slowly drifted down to the far side of the lake. I caught some movement on the shoreline. Big black spot in a grassy opening. Figured it was worth further investigation. I pulled oars as hard as possible back to camp. 2 KM as the crow flies. Had some lunch and waited for C-Man to take off bear hunting. Then I grabbed my gear and rowed back to the other end of the lake. The bear was napping in the sun as I drifted into shore. I quietly beached the boat, hopped out. I laid half in the water to use the beach as a rest. I watched the bear get up and feed for an hour or so. In that time I even switched my safety off twice, once even resting my finger on the trigger. I ultimately decided he wasn't quite big enough and left the area. I'll probably kick my own ass for letting it walk. But headed back tomorrow with C-man to see if we can get him in on the bear. Possibly breaking his only shooting colour phase streak.

Been slacking on the bear hunting front lately. Now I'm in a little bit of a panic. Had last weekend, next weekend is my step sister's wedding and then I have the following weekend. So now I have to start being less picky.

Friday I got a call from a family friend wanting to head out bear hunting on Saturday. Wasn't very hard to agree on a spot to go, considering I had intended going out there anyways. On top of that I haven't hunted that spot since... well 5 or 6 years. Kind of stopped hunting the area when others started bear hunting with me. I asked what time we should meet up. He got his hackles up and said "it's not deer hunting, we don't need to be up zero dark thirty. I wan't to sleep in". So I again asked "what time do you want to head out?" His reply was "Eight should be good"

I was thinking... ten... noon... ish. But 8 was fine considering the sunlight smashes me in the face at 5:30 these days.

We spent most of the day without seeing a whole lot of nothing. The area sure has grown up over the last half decade. But we did see a sow with triplets and a decent boar on private property.

This sow sent her cubs waaaaay up a tree and wanted to fight. But when you're hiding behind a truck, we both kept our distance.

We ran into a conservation officer. He was very professional and pleasant to deal with. I had buddy's 12 year old squirming a little. I told him that "the first time you have to deal with a C.O. you get a one time $150 initiation ticket"

The C.O. was real cool and walked the young gun through the process of interacting with a conservation officer.

After dinner Saturday night, I got home late. So Sunday morning I decided to head out solo to a not so secret spot. Haven't hunted bears in the area for several years. I think I half assed hunted it 3 or 4 years ago. But mostly just headed out fishing/getting a load of firewood. So not so secret... Had a vehicle headed out every 3 kilometres or so. Seen some sign on a busy road, which is a good sign considering how much traffic there was. Finally I found a road I could head off on. It was a newer road... not even on google earth. Had a lot of country to overlook, but seen some logging equipment just over the ridge. So I left the area alone.

Went and hunted beyond the lake because most of the heavy traffic ended there. I had seen mule deer (some ok bucks), a young bull and cow moose together which I thought was odd... but no bears. It wasn't until 1ish I had a nice cinnamon bear cross the road just 50 yards in front of me. Paused for a moment but not quite long enough for me to react. I figured if that bear was scared, there would be bigger bears around anyways. So I carried on for another couple kilometres and spotted this guy.

To be fair, I kind of want a black bear that makes a Kodiak feel small. But I digress.

I went to go check out another spot that I thought "last time I was there, it was pretty overgrown" but there's a logging company in there now. So should be even better in a couple years. I did find a little wagon trail that hooked off. Got to the top of the hill and though I saw a cow. Was no cow. Oh shit! There's the bear I want. It wandered down the hill into the thick bush. I figured it was headed down the hill to the open meadow below. If it was headed there, it would have to come across a 200 yard stretch of straight road. So I head down and went to go find a spot to watch.

Get set up in a swampy meadow, in wait with the mosquitoes and then some couple come cruising around the corner on a Sunday drive. The stop and talk to me not so quietly. Asked if I was out bear hunting and proceeded to tell me their friend had been chasing a big ass bear around the area. They were friendly and proceeded on their drive.

I wandered back to the truck and ate my sandwich looking at the road. Seen one other small small bear and headed out. On the drive out I looked out into the field and thought "cow elk". Drove another hundred yards or so and locked up the brakes and did a u-turn. "A cow elk!?"

Didn't even smell. It wasn't a small bear either. That paw is 5" (give or take a brown hair) wide. I have my theories, but I'll never know what actually did happen.

Was a long Saturday without seeing a bear. Seen 1 deer. WOW. So Sunday was a little tough to get motivated. Did a long loop to hunt an area I haven't hunted in 11 years. Took me a little bit, but finally spotted my first bear.

My theory on my bear hunting area this year.

1 - it was kind of a late spring. Haven't had a whole lot of hot weather. Everything seemed to green up at the same time, so bears weren't really forced onto the road.

2 - Tree planters were bombing all over the countryside keeping the bears off the road

3 - lots of people out in general with everything being shut down and having extra time off

4 - Even though I spent a lot of time out camping in May, I didn't hunt bears as hard because I wasn't as desperate due to the amount of time off I had.

5 - Me saying "I'm not going to be so damn picky with bears this spring" is like my dad saying "I'm going to get back into hunting spring bears"... it's all lies.

Got out of town at 5pm on July 31 and head north for opening weekend of goats. Had to meet up with a Co-worker in Quesnel. Got to Smithers around 2am. Slung the seat back and passed out for a couple hours. Slept in a little, but not too bad. Finished the rest of the drive in the twilight (team Edward). Caught a nice moose in the headlights and bumped a sow with 2 cubs not far from the trial head. The sow hit the woods, but I called the cubs within a couple yards of the truck. The sow gave a loud huff and cubs took off (video on instagram).

The trail was super luscious to start. The joys of me not living near there and cutting trail. Wasn't bad though. Was up to my glassing point by 8am and started glassing. Wasn't seeing anything so headed over to where I wanted to set up camp. There was a stash pack left up there last year with water treatment, fire paste, saw and a couple other goodies.

So I went to fire up some water for some mr. noodle... no lighter, no matches, no nothing. Looked for some chert or something to smash rocks together (should have taken that one companies offer to become a geologist... but I'm more into metal... shitty rock joke). I considered making a bow drill to get a fire going, but what little wood is up there isn't really dry. I totally forgot about the water bag trick. But I settled on the first night of burning my phone's battery to watch a movie I had downloaded on Netflix. I should also note that I went minimalist because it was only 2 sleeps... 3 at the most. I also thought I would be tough and skip packing bug spray... so here's my sleeping shelter.

It looks so simple and easy. Well it is relatively easy, but it's bigger than it looks. The pictures don't make it seem big, then you get to my lookout spot and it still doesn't look that big. Then you start travelling the country and you start to realize that it isn't small. In the last picture, looking from there to the other side is almost 2km out straight line.

There was lots of berries around. However, I haven't been a fan of saskatoon berries in 25 years or so. I find them way too seedy and kind of dry. Give me some mountain blueberries any day.

Took quite awhile to make any distance. Usually a lot of the green foliage is dry and crunchy by September... so if I clear it out now, I should have a good quiet walking path. May get tricky during archery season, but I'll figure that out then. Got 1 trailcam in a spot that it may get jacked. I don't think anyone will go into the one spot. The one pictured is where 3 trails converge into 1 and drop over the ledge into the creek bottom. So hopefully that plays out. Should get some more cameras, lost a couple to bears and whatnot during the spring.

Didn't see any deer yet, but I was pretty low to the ground most of the day.

Oh to be your age instead of 60. I look at alpine from a plane now. I do cover a lot of country on an atv and maybe I should pack a camera.
First time out in the back country with shorts and work boots and I got a heap of poison ivy and some stinging nettle.
Always carry a bic lighter.
Chinese noodle doesn't taste as good dry. The powder sticks to your teeth. Freeze dried/de-hydrated stuff you just add water and keep it against your body to warm it up and chew. Those military meals with the heat pack, well my dog sniffed and walked away.
A friend decided to just go with trailmix, nuts, twigs and granola. He had the runs so bad he had to go home.

I've had a decent amount of freeze dry still dry. Not the worst thing. I actually enjoy stinging nettle... ??... but hate devils club.


Need help making a decision that won't effect my hunt at all. Just trying to decide which rifle to pack. I'm comfortable shooting them all. All of them will do the job just fine. Just not sure which one.

Parker Hale 1100 chambered in the highly underrated classic... the 6.5x55. Spitting 140 grain accubonds with the aid of a Redfield revenge 4-12x40. My go-to rifle in pretty much every situation. (Side note: there's been trigger work done as it breaks cleanly... but has overtravel. Wondering how much to drop a trigger tech trigger into it.)

Went back out with buddy and his kid to do some fishing after work and packed flak cannons. Buddy's kid wanted to shoot some ducks so bad. There was some scaup swimming around. We tried to convince him we don't shoot mud ducks. Good thing we let him. They're underrated.

This past Saturday I took the kid out to get his first buck.

I was humming and hawing about what to do for the long weekend. Thought about going to Smithers for a mountain goat hunt or possibly take another buddy or two on a deer hunt during any buck season in BC. Ended up taking buddy's 12 year old out to try and get him his first buck. being a the long weekend of any buck season, I thought it would be busy in the area we were headed. We got to the spot i wanted to hunt before daylight with no one else there. we spent 3 hours hunting the area. The young gun was starting to fall behind and drag his feet. We got back to the truck. I asked the young gun if we should go to my secret bear spot, secret whitetail spot or try a different spot. He wanted to go to my whitetail spot. He wanted to go to my whitetail spot...As we were relocating, the young gun had a little siesta. When he woke up I gave him a Rockstar. I told him he better be careful with it, as he may be too jittery if we see a buck. He informed me that even without it, he may be too jittery. We get to the spot. Sure as snuff... we spot a buck. We both lined up on him. I seen he was pretty unsteady. Told him to go prone if he can. Meanwhile I'm thinking "I should knock this deer over". I guess the young gun couldn't see him while prone. I was getting antsy as I thought the deer was going to bust. Then the young gun starts taking his time to set up his shooting sticks. I started to get nervous and seriously considered starting the trigger squeeze. To be fair the deer was facing us and only presented a frontal shot. I heard the signature of the kid's 7mm_08. The deer took a step back and then took off. but not in a big hurry. We gave it some time and went looking for blood. We were having a tough time picking up a blood trail. The kid found his tracks. I told him to stay put and went off in the direction of the deer. After only finding 1 patch of blood, I whistled the young gun to my spot. I got him to stand on the blood spot while I carried on. I ended up following the path of least resistance and... well

We kind of screwed up here. The ducks were interested in the decoys, but we didn't open up the water. So they didn't really have a place to land. After I did stomp through there to break up the ice, we didn't have anymore ducks come in.

Hunting season kind of came and ended. Got out lots, but I feel I could have hunted harder (I always do). Still can hunt goats until February... but solo winter goats without proper winter gear... we'll see, but don't hold your breath. I do have a lynx tag, so that may happen.
