Just got back yesterday from a two plus week moose hunt. Great stuff.
My buddy called out a moose for his sister on the 23rd. One shot kill, her first moose.
My second son was in camp the 26th. On the 28th, buddy calls out a moose for my son, after quietly getting in place my son {15} and myself, watch and listen to the willows crashing down as he's coming. Great stuff.
Out of the willows comes a really nice bull, 15 feet from the first gut pile.
at 80 yards he stops, I tell my son take him, as we both take aim son takes first shot at big game, as I fire 2 seconds latter not noticing any problems with the moose son would have gotten back onto moose and see's it stumble. Knowing son had not cycled the bolt I take a head shot putting the bull down 15 feet away.
As we walk down to the spot I'm congradulating son on first moose.
Now it gets interesting, after gutting and 1/2ing I see only one shot to the lungs {perfect broadside shot from above} just missing the shoulder blade. The bullet tore up the lungs but did not enter the other 1/4.
Son is shooting pretty hot handloads in 3006 165 grain hornady bts.
I'm shooting 300 wsm 180 grain cheap federal powershock. As I just bought this gun I've only fired a few types of ammo and found this load to be the most accurate.
I would of expected the 300 to have passed through the animal, but I all so would not of expected to miss.
Any way it's moose two down and a great trip also.
Last morning in camp as I'm walking to my truck I see a wolf, we had heard them close the nite before and had been told it was a 20 plus pack, by the time we had gotten our guns and run down to the road, three wolfs were running straight away from us. At a 100 yards I take the slowest, at 125 yards I hit the second slowest.
After happily helping out the moose and wolf population we finished up and off we go.
Great trip, had both sons in camp for the first time.
Oldest son is pretty happy with himself. After I get home and tell wife story she thinks I should tell son maybe not his first.
I'm not sure as I didn't recover bullet.
End of story, sons first moose.

Sounds like a great hunt. You really cant put a value on time spent in the woods with your kids. Plus you got some moose and a wolf. I was suprised to hear that the second moose came so close to the first gut pile. I would have thought the smell would spook him???

The samething happened to a guy I met last year. His partner shot a moose. The next morning another he shot a moose 10' from the gut pile of the moose his partner shot the night before. I would have thought that another moose or animal besides a predator wouldnt go near a gut pile.
