Several requested that I share some photos from my trip North this year. Was a spectacular 3 week adventure in 2 Provinces, 2 Territories and 1 State, capped off by my wife and I taking a dip in the Arctic Ocean on our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We tented the entire trip and put on just shy of 10,000 kms on our old rig. A dream road trip with my family that I look forward to doing again in the near future.

I tried Imgur on my iphone and ipad but I couldn't get the links to work. Tried on the imac and worked really easy. Not sure the size they allow on the uploads but these were all resizes I had done previously while editing. Seems to have worked.

Nice trip
one day I will go too

I had been saying that for years and it just never became a priority. Finally, in 2015, I stopped thinking about it and just went and did it. Was life changing. We went all the way to Inuvik that year and since then I was waiting for the ITH to be completed so that we could go all the way to Tuk. With our 25th, both my wife and I wanted something special and a beach holiday was planned. ;) Not what most people think about when it comes to a beach holiday but you can't beat 24 hr sunlight to see the sights.

Thanks Dana, I don't have Imac, but wonder why is it not possible to upload right from my pictures folder on my home computer.
Like I said I'm only allowed a max 750kb image, which is really small.
By the way I have been on the Dempster to the Arctic Circle marker/sign, it was a great trip and would like to do it again, perhaps further.

No flat tires per say but I did loose a wheel within sight of Tuk. Lug nuts jiggled loose and broke several posts when it came off. Luckily I was going real slow and the new road was soft. Got it back together with the 3 remaining good posts and limped into Tuk where the mechanic had to rob a few more posts from some vehicles at the dump. All was good and made it back home with no other issues.

Thanks for sharing your trip. Did most of the trip up the Dempster with my Dad several years ago. We got rained out and they were shutting down the river ferry at Fort McPpherson due to high water, so we had to turn back. It's a great memory. I didn' t really have a grasp how vast the north really is until that trip. Standing at the Olglevie lookout was truely impressive. Planning to do it again and finish the trip.

Yeah you were lucky, it could have turned your trip into a nightmare.

One would think when you get your lug nuts torqued right before you leave, you'd be good. Definitely a good thing I lost the wheel with such a soft and gentle landing. When doing trips with older vehicles, you have to prepare yourself for worse case scenerios. It is always in the back of your mind that $hit can happen at any time.

Great post!!...Awesome pics!!..I did the trip in ‘98 and the scenery just blew me away. I hauled my Starcraft tent trailer all the way to Inuvik without issues, although I did get a flat on the truck, pulled into Arctic Red and the tire guy fixed me right up, still have the bits of shale he found in the tire lol.

I don’t think I would trust a Coleman tent to stand up to that rain but it looks like you made out alright!..I’m definitely feeling the urge to go back with my kids now and drive all the way to Tuk.

You need to upload the pics to imgur.com then paste the links to those pics in the thread.

You cannot upload pics directly because the 750kb size limit is way too low and almost all digital pics are way bigger than that

We went July 5-28th. We planned it so we could be at the Arctic Ocean for our anniversary. Having 24 hr sunlight was amazing. But it is tough to plan when to see wildlife. No last light, first light that one normally relies on. Taking wildlife photos at midnight was quite the experience. I was hoping to miss the hot and smoke of the previous summers here in BC but ended up with heavy smoke from the many fires in Yukon and Alaska and we came close to not making it to Dawson due to fire activity. Bugs were pretty darn good. Might have been due to amount of smoke in the air. I, personally only put bug dope on a couple of times over the 3 weeks. Bugs were nasty in Inuvik but we had good wind in Tuk that kept them down. By the time I made it back down to Dawson we had heavy rains that took all the smoke out of air and the wet pretty much followed us all the way home. When we went in 2015 we planned for late August to catch the fall colours on the Dempster. Turned out to be an early snow year and we were in winter whiteout conditions for much of the Dempster. Was very happy we missed the snow on the 2019 trip. Funny to see the same early snow hit the North hard this year that they even closed down Liard Hotsprings in Aug due to heavy snow. I really want to go up in late Sept early Oct one year to catch the caribou migration. But I would fully be prepared for rough weather.

We tented the entire time, most of the time in gov rec sites. Had planned where we camped well in advance and made sure we utilized pools, hotsprings and a few campgrounds with showers. We tried fishing while on the Dempster but didn't have a ton of time. We bought temporary Yukon licences in Dawson but didn't think about the fact we were leaving the Yukon fairly quick and then into the NWT. We spent so much time playing with wildlife that fishing wasn't a big priority anyways.

Amazing pics, makes me want to learn how to use a camera more gooder. We did a 4 week trip last July from Mission to Alaska and back and although there are some great pics, they don't do it justice. We were a little less off the beaten path with my 7 yr old son and 1.5 yr old daughter and a trailer but I hope we do the trip again a little more rugged when they are older.

Just re-read my last line and I need to make a correction. I've seen it in this thread already about just doing it and that's it. Don't "hope you do it", do it. We always talked and dreamed about an Alaska road trip but that was always a few years away. Things came up and we decided to stop putting the good stuff off. Do it.

Anyways, thanks for the amazing pictures. Now I need to balance my time figuring out archery and photography hahaha.

10,000km @ 15L/100km = 1500L

If he got 17L being fully loaded ... I doubt the xterra would burn more than 17 .... then 1700L.

Call it $1.35/L and probably somewhere between $2000-$2300

We want to do it one year as well, but I would never convince my girls to do 3 weeks in a tent there and back.

What I spent in gas I saved by sleeping in a tent. ;) Learned some tricks from the first time. One was to buy the cheapest gas when you see it and use the jerry cans often. 4 jerry cans does weigh ya down and burns more fuel but the cost savings when you drive by those out of the way gas stations that have high prices is money in the bank. Most travelers I talked to thought I was crazy having 4 cans on the roof but then they would complain about the high prices. :) Because I was focused on wildlife and wildlife photography, I did a lot of back and forth trying to spot critters. The jerry cans allowed me to not worry about driving too far and not having enough to make it to the next fuel up. When I planned the trip last winter I estimated the kms and how many tanks and average price per tank so I could save enough in our travel budget. Amazingly, I was only over budget by $25 after 3 weeks. But I had it planned to the tea and knew where I would be when and how much added back and forths I would have. Another huge cost savings was we treated the trip like a backpack hunt. All the meals were planned and all the food was bought ahead of time. We only ate out a few times the entire trip. Every meal was packed in indvidual baggies with very little need to buy anything extra on the way. We only camped in the same campsite twice over the entire 3 weeks. That is a ton of set up and take down. And everything had to be packed just right to fit on the top or on the back of the xterra. We heard a ton of comments like 'You sure pack alot of stuff' and it always made me laugh as it normally came from people in large RVs. Hahaha.

Exactly my philosophy. We are not getting any younger. There are no guarentees in life. If you want to do something then just get off your butt and do it. I think in this day and age it is so easy to fall into the trap of waiting for better days. But health is not a given. Waiting till retirement might be too late. I saw sooo many people on this trip Living their Dream. Be it on motorcycles, 4x4s, or RVs. All had reached that point of 'Life is too short. Just Do It!' It was very encouraging so see. I talked to many who had come way farther than I had. Some, even in little cars. I met travelers from as far off as Florida, California, Ontario and Europe. Some shiped their 4x4s over from Europe and landed in Halifax to then drive across Canada and then up to the Arctic Ocean. Was very cool to see people just out 'Doing It!'

As for photography expense, I still shoot a relatively cheap camera compared to some real photographers I know. I am currently shooting a Nikon Coolpix P900 which is a bridge camera with a crazy large optical zoom. I don't have a fancy set up with a ton of lenses. It is a all-in-one point and shoot camera. The 83x optical zoom is equivant to 24-2000mm so it has a great reach out and touch when it comes to wildlife. It is actually more powerful than my spotter. I came home with more than 8000 photos as I shoot rpid fire on wildlife which snaps 7 photos at a time. One thing I was lacking was I should had got a phonescope adaptor for my phone and spotter which would have came in handy for long distance videoing as the video quality of the p900 is less than a good iphone.

Exactly. Our last trip we met a couple from Ireland and we sat to have a drink in Dawson City watching the sun drop at 11:30 pm. They’d come over the last few years for 6 weeks at a time to tour the country. Incredible who you meet from all over the world who are just like us. Those are our most prized trips. Already planning and can’t wait to go again.

What camera is your daughter using? Are any of the landscape ones hers? Just asking as 24mm on a crop sensor doesnt seem wide enough for some of those pics.

They are fantastic. While my old Nikon still does well during day time it's definitely annoying for any low light photos as the ISO generally has to be increased and those older cameras (2012) just don't handle the higher ISO settings well at all.

The new mirrorless options are fantastic, but I cannot spring up $2000 for a camera alone ... let alone any lenses on top of that

All these photos were shot with my P900. It isn't much of a landscape camera but given the right light, it can still pull out decent landscapes. My daughter shoots Sony Alpha 7ii which is a mirrorless camera. Her landscapes kick ass on mine. This morning she just gave me a canvas print from a late night shoot we did in Tombstone and it is 1000 times better than anything I took that night. But keep in mind, photography is way more than just the camera. It is also the operator. She has shot beside me for a lot of years now and it is obvious, her landscapes far surpass mine. The more you play with the light, the more you learn. I get stuck shooting with wildlife in mind and don't think outside the box enough when it comes to landscapes. Her mirrorless camera limits her wildlife captures to only those we are up close and personal on, but her landscape eye sees way more than what my old eyes see.

Yeah, I could tell it was a mirrorless based on size. And no, your camera will never match hers, even in the hands of a pro photographer. They just handle high ISO so much better for those twilight pics. No comparison.

Sony definitely makes some wonderful mirrorless cameras, if not the best out there for now!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures once again.
Not a bucket list kind of guy, but I think we will have to travel to this area to see the sights in person.

I was never much of a bucketlist guy either and have always enjoyed exploring my local haunts. But now it seems the exploring bug has pushed me further and further from own little hobbit hole. So much I now want to see and so little time. A bucket list now helps me prioritize the where and when.

Dana, would almost swear that you found my pic card's, been up to the Yukon 5 times in the last 9 yrs and sure missed it this past yr, it is one of the nicest places in Canada to visit and spend the summer's, we have always had a good time and everybody would ask about the bugs, can honestly count on my hands how many times we had a problem, the one spot that was the worse was Engineer Creek and were warned ahead of time to bypass and go up the road another few k and no bugs. would move to the Yukon in a heart beat if it wasn't for the wife and her friend's here, found the weather is about the same as Clearwater lately. Sure enjoyed your pics as they brought back a lot of memories.

Thanks for this Dana. Brings back memories. We slept in the back of a Toyota pickup under the canopy for 2 weeks. I do remember washing 300 lbs of mud off my truck.

Thanks. I certainly believe I'm addicted to the North and will be back many more times. Everytime up, It leaves me longing to see and do more. Would love to do the Dempster during the caribou migration one year. This last trip was planned on our anniversary which wasn't the ideal time to see caribou. But seeing the Midnight Sun at the Arctic Ocean as we ate cake was definitely a memory I will never forget. I was warned about Engineer Creek and only pulled into the campsite to use the pithouses. By far the most evil bugs on the entire highway. I personally found the bugs to be mild compared to what I am used to working in in areas like the Tree Farm here in Clearwater.

Thinking that a family roadtrip to Yellowknife would be great for this upcoming summer. Just starting the research phase of my planning.

We went up to Tuk last year, too. Hmm, we stopped there for a picture there, too. Where is the pingo picture ? chuckle.

We pull a 20' travel trailer with a one ton p/u. We budget 20L per 100Km. But get usually between 13 to 19. Passing on the hill sections of the Coq gives me the 19.

BC trips worth doing

Over the Hurley to Bridge
Up the Kettle to the head waters
Bella Colla (sp) though the Gang ranch and the Chilkotin

Use the backroads while we still have them . You can't drive to Benitik (sp) Arm anymore.
