I'm hoping some of you wolf experts can recommend a call for wolf hunting. I am going to try in region 3-19 and I was thinking of using rabbit distress call. Someone suggested cow elk but there aren't any elk in region 3-19 so that won't work. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Howling, with or without a call, seems to work !

"HERE WOLF"

As above, howling seems to work best. Especially with strong packs ready to defend their territory.

I've used howling and distress sounds with good results. Unless specifically targeting wolves, I do not howl as no coyote will come in

Called in one near Francios Lake many years ago. Rabbit squealer. Deer hunting was slow so I decided to test out this rabbit squealer. Did it for about ten minutes off and on. Then stopped. Another ten minutes passed, and out comes this wolf. Unfortunately, I missed him. But I'm sure his ears were ringing.

Any distress call will work even if there are no elk in the area.A deer or elk, rabbit, even a woodpecker in distress.A cow moose call works as well.
Good luck on your hunt.

A friend was out scouting for wolf sign yesterday and found a kill.He made a quick stand down wind where he could see if a wolf was crossing an old logging road.Started calling on his rabbit distress call.Sure enough within 2 minutes he heard a wolf howl.It circled down wind like he figured might happen and he bagged a wolf.

I watched a YouTube video where a guy in Monatana was having good success with a calf moose distress call. Otherwise like most others have said howling is good as well as rabbit distress calls.

So kind of off topic but i am heading up to the cabin next week in 6-04, forecast is for low of -39  Anyone know if this would screw my wolf hunting other than freezing my dick off, any tips would be appreciated... on the wolf hunting :)

I've called one in about 100 yards from me but he wouldn't show himself, he must of hung around howling at me for at least 45 min, funny enough I was sighting in my 30-06 and he would howl everytime I fired, after sighting in I howled him in but he always stayed in behind trees.

I practice with a howler tube. It travels for miles. I find tracks all around where I was the next day. Listen to wolf howls and mimic them.
I found distress calls bring in everything, even grizzly in winter. Nov 22 a grizzly track went past where I was calling from. I'm not interested in bears, coyotes or cougars. I'm on a save the moose mission.
If you get a reply settle in for a while. If it is the pack thinking they are coming to the alpha male kill it makes for some exciting times. Only watched it on video. I had 2 sit on the road 500 yards away and look at me. I didn't know what they were, like the neighbours dogs, so I didn't shoot.
