View Full Version : Mulie estimate score?

WoodOx

So a buddy of mine who cant rank bracket at all saw a buck in one of my spots last night.

Here are the details:

Looks 'mature'
Was minimum 3" outside each ear (6" total)
Was as tall as was wide.
Was typical 4 point.

What is a mulies typical ear to ear measurement? 24-26"?

What would you guesstimate this at? 160? That would be a bloody tall buck!?

Depending on the mass, it could easily go well over 160. My 2004 Muley is narrower than his ears, quite tall and grossed 196 5/8, so I wouldn't hold much to the width in the final score. He is 22 1/2 inside and 22 tall, long forks, which is key, goes to show that width is misleading

I judge a to the ear muley at around 20"- 3" outside is looking around 25-26. When a person sais they've seen a 30" mule deer, I assume it is more like a 25 unless they've taken many big bucks and know their stuff. Ground shrinkage factor on mule deer tends to be pretty high.

Thanks derek! So helpful!

What ever happened to that 'cranker' muley you had tied up at the beginning on this season?

i score my deer by, after the kill of a 4x4 leagle buck, by how much fat is on him and later on how he tast's coming off the BBQ, a nice rack is good, i have a wall mount, and some other ones hanging in the shop, but most of all how much meat is in the frezzer after,,, And i am still looking for a nice big buck that will come one day to me,,,,,

best of luck allen.

i dont tend to have much trouble finding meat bucks, but much prefer moose or elk meat. I like to let the young ones experience life a lil before killin em thats all!

Andrew, sounds like a shooter. A 22" wide by 22" tall typical 4x4 can easily be ranked in many different classifications. Maybe it was a really light 4x4 mid to low 140's, average in weight maybe looking at 150+ then there's the larger calibur bucks 160+ who have great mass carried from bases to tips. Hard to say with those measurments but take a look for yourself and remember it's not all about how high it scores in the record books, as long as it scores high and respectable in your own books then that's all that matter. Cheers bud.

Sounds like a really nice buck but he may not be a great scoring buck. He could have "crab-claws" for forks. Sounds like a really nice frame though!
Go shoot him and post some pics.8)

It's a dink Andrew. Definitely NOT a buck a trophy hunter like you would shoot. Tell me where he is so I can waste a tag and cull him from the gene pool. There is NO place for a buck like that - except in my freezer.

Good luck finding him Aguacher - bucks like that won't make too many mistakes. Does your buddy hunt? How can he capture all those details without getting a shot?

Agaucher, That muley I seen has either been shot or poached, I've been but nothing come of it actually havent seen any deer near or around where he was and I hunted it thoroughly aswell,

Sorry from the bad smell of my post I just figured it'd be fairly hard to judge a muley with no picture! 8)

I have seen mature bucks with ears at 18 inches all the way up to 27 inches, so your description does nothing for a score guess. It's all about tine length. It could have been a crab clawed 4 point with 18 inch ears but only 18 inch mains with a score below 140. Or it could have had 24-25 inch ears with 27 inch mains and 20 inch G2's with deep front and rear forks and you'd have a Booner. I personally don't trust anything from someone who is inexperienced at scoring on the hoof. A big buck to a lot of people can just be a small 4 point to me. The only time I get excited is if someone who's seen many animals before says 'It was as big as an elk' then you have a Monster Buck!!!!

Andrew, I think the writing is on the wall... looks like you're gonna' have to shoot this thing and tell us all what he scores.

I know someone that every Buck he sees is described exactly this way.......

Sadly though he never manages to "get a shot" ;-)

Saw him this morning.

He is as he describes, no way hes wider than 22 though and def not 22 high. Hell go 165-170 maybe, im going to go tomorrow and if hes there again decide if I wanna shoot him

My bud didnt shoot him b/c it was dark. I didnt shoot him b/c he was at 60 yards and I only had my bow.

thanks for the input crew

I WOU LD AGREE WITH DANA.HE IS DEFINATELY AN EXPERT ON DEER, LOOK AT THE ONES HE PASSES UP.IF IT IS A MATURE BUCK WITH HIS EARS STRAIGHT OUT SIDEWAYS I SAY HE COULD GO 28 INCH Ear to ear .

dana

Aguacher,
Just to get ya on the right page, what would you guesstimate this buck at? Is he smaller or bigger than the buck you saw? Look at tine length. Are the forks deep or shallow? Are the mains stubby or long like this buck's? Does he have eyeguards? How's his mass? Is it willow horned or heavy? Width doesn't really add much to the score but if it is tall and narrow, it definately can detract from the overall score. A 22 inch wide outside buck probably won't have an inside spread much greater than 18-19 inches. Where would you put this buck compared to the buck you saw?

From that excellent info, I'm thinking he'll go 167 2/8"...maybe 167 3/8" Gross....likely net 160 5/8" (sounds a little shy on his left G2) (grin).

So Stone, what do ya think that buck I posted up scores? I know the thread is a little bizzare, but lets try to make this a scoring lesson for those that might be a little inexperienced at the 'rack bracketing' as Mike Eastman calls it.

WoodOx
10-05-2007, 10:28 PM
The buck ive seen has deeper forks than the one in your picture, but it looks as if that buck in your pic has quite small ears.

I would bracket the buck in your picture in the high 160s, possibly gross 170.
Like I said above, the buck in yours has decent mass, good width and height but is really lacking in fork depth.

What would you say his overall width is?

What do you guess this ones overall ear to ear (erect) width to be? His score?

Steve....I want to say ~175ish gross, but that 3rd picture really has me guessing (he sure looks good in the 3rd pic).

What do you figure he scores?

dana
10-09-2007, 05:09 PM
Stone,
Tried to get my son on that buck this weekend. Only was able to see the smaller of the 3 4 points (the one lip curling in the other photo thread). Tried to make a play on him with fast fading light. Didn't hear him go but I assume he must have busted us and stepped into the timber. Was a fun play regardless.
As for what the bigger buck scores, my guesstimate would have him flirting with the 170 mark. 169-170. The lack of G1's keeps him from that 175 class. Was really something to see my work partner hold off on shooting him. That buck would have made one heck of a first buck but he wants to be with his brother when he kills his first buck. He definately thought it was pretty cool when he watched me sneek right up on them with the camera.

So then at least I am in the ball park.

And Steve, what was your guess on that buck in the back of the truck pic?

dana
10-09-2007, 05:20 PM
Aguacher,
I'd put that buck in the same ballpark. Shorter mains than the buck I took pics of but decent mass and a couple small G1's.

Yeah Id have to go with Dana on this one, him being between 185ish gross.

BCR was right on on my young buck at 166 6/8. Nets only 159.

Shedder,
I always guess low, that's why I let so many big boys walk. ;)

Stone,
Sweet trophy wall!!!! I think I need a stone on my wall someday. A nice goat is also a desire of mine too. As for that muley, he definately ain't no slouch. The other mounts are distracting me from a good score guess, but I'm thinkin he's in that 175 range.

Tall, wide, above average and symmetrical forks.
My guess on BCR's beaut is 181 net (I bet it nets close to gross, looks nice!)
