^^^^I was going to ask, as it is a good sized rub...moose even? I have seen quite a few mooserubs on lodgepole pine, which by the pic that tree appears to be...

I'm no expert, but I think MD rubs are a little bit lower to the ground than that.
I wouuld say that belongs to a taller animal.

Is it all around the tree? This looks too perfect to be done by an animal IMO.

Maybe a cougar scratching (marker) post.

That is definitely a rub.
That was done by a very pissed off bull.

I've seen a number of rubs where they will call to their cows and half assed rub a smaller tree. I have screamed back and forth with a bull who was rutted up and angry. Your picture is exactly what he left behind. I have seen a number of rubs like that in other areas I hunt.

From experience, smaller trees with rubs have been around gathering areas where the bulls try to entice the cows to them.

Bigger rubs like that seem to be in random spots (from beds to feeding areas to gathering spots). Probably whatever the spot the bulls choose to battle or really make a stand.

That y friends is a bear marking pole. More than one bear's been at it. more or less a territorial thing.

Maybe least expert on here - but I thought this was a bear pole as well.

if you inspect the rub closely there's a good chance of finding hair stuck to the trunk. then you'll have a better idea of what creature did the work. Any other sign nearby? droppings? scat? tracks?
i haven't seen too many bear rubs that have the bark removed like that, mostly just the bark rubbed to a smooth shiny finish.
i'd put money down that it's an elk rub.

Awesome. Very moose-ey area so moose sounds likely

Elk or moose.

Deer usually rub smaller trees than that one (i have seen them that size tho) and not as high off the ground
