So hey without giving up any hunting locations let’s track whitetail sightings in and around Kamloops. I’ve seen them at pass lake, watching creek,Saul lake, timber lake , tunkwa, Chris creek, squito and Campbell lakes ect. They are spreading fast. I’ve listed the places most others have seen them as well. But I’m curious about the high steep country where our mule deer thrive because I’m starting to see them in the steep stuff now.

Lol your absolutely right they are here. They are everywhere now. Their are no secret spots now and most aren’t willing to walk hours in the dark to get to my secret spots. I’m merely saying they are going to become a problem for our mule deer they need to be controlled. I don’t think a lot of hunters truly realize just how many of these deer are actually out there. They just hide now in response to the open doe season. I shoot my two whitetail every year 25 minutes from town all the while listening to road hunters drive by and throw beer cans out the window. If your any kind of whitetail hunter you have nothing to worry about trust me

Any how my point is close to the road or a serious hike back all the hunting pressure in the world ain’t gonna get rid of them

How’re you hunting them? I grew up hunting them out of stands in woodlots in S. Ontario but hitting them on public land out west is a mystery to me.

I mostly still hunt them but crazy slow I glass everywhere before I take my next steps. I try and spot them before they spot me. Some times it works most times it doesn’t lol got to be quick on the trigger. I do some rattling. I’m a meat hunter don’t really care about antlers however I’d like to get a big guy some day😃

I think the two WT buck or doe limit in reg 3 is adequate..it is the most liberal season for whitetails in the province..

I agree it’s very liberal and a great opportunity to put meat in the freezer. I had a few does run across the road in front of me yesterday on the goose lake road headed to Edith lake to try some fishing. Worth investigating

A buddy of mine spotted a good herd of whitetail around mount lolo today. All does and fawns. I’ve never hunted out that way but apparently it’s known to produce some good bucks,

I agree and disagree and not picking at you personally

They will live in any habitat but there is definitely preferred habitat and habitat they flourish in well beyond others. The Mule deer is pretty adaptable as well but they also have a preference. What many seem to miss when it comes to these species they have habitat that they are truly adapted to but if there is a lack of competition in fringe habitat they will use it as well. Example MD dominated BC for many years because there was no competition in the fridge habitat. My opinion one of the reasons we are seeing WT in fringe habitat in B.C. is a decline in MD populations providing less competition as well

Every season we see posts from hunters who can’t find WT and often it’s they are looking in poor WT habitat. Yes like many other hunters I have seen them in crazy areas to but this does not mean they inhabit these areas in good numbers

Harry I know you have no issue finding your WT and you have some good WT populations in your area. But for those hunting WT in a good portion of B.C. with lower density populations WT are often in the prime WT habitat and almost non existent in the fridge habitat

Some of this post lead into extra rambling but in simple terms if B.C. hunters want to find WY focus on WT habitat because yes they can adapt to a range of habitat but they still have preferred habitat. With a lot of B.C. WT populations being relatively new they are more focused on preferred habitat

I agree with wild one. Just because you see whitetail in a area doesn’t necessarily mean that their is a huntable population. This year I had a whitetail doe run across the road in front of me at Saul lake. I highly doubt any whitetail could survive the amount of snow that country receives over the winter. I believe a lot of these deer are just passing through looking for acceptable habitats. I’ve hunted many places around Kamloops where I’ve seen one to five whitetail and never came across them again. It’s a crap shoot most times but every once in a while an area pans out.

Pauly, you made a comment about too much snow in areas. I have to disagree. I have a cabin in a bit of a snow belt ( hwy 24 area). What we find is that mule deer migrate out in the winter but the whitetail seem to stay. I'm no expert but this is what I have seen in my area. It is not a whitetail hot spot by any means but they seem to do just fine here.

Yes white tail yard up in deep snow. Around here we have lots of wolves .. easy pickings. But I don’t disagree with you at all. Just so many different factors in different areas. I guess that’s what makes it fun. If finding and hunting whitetail were easy I probably wouldn’t do it.

I agree my friend they definitely have preferred habitats and preferred micro habitats even, I was just saying generally that they adapt to many habitats...an example: the Couese (I think that's how it is spelled?) WT in Arizona - check out the meat eater episode, its pretty cool...

I shoot a white tail easier in reg 7a then 3,

BUT, like walks with deer says. Small pockets, and they will exist under your nose in 100s without ever seeing them!

I’ve found a small pocket that keeps my freezer happy every year since I found it. I just head out for a day trip in mid to late November and shoot one.

I think lots of guys try and hunt to much land and over look the best areas. Find a pocket and learn it. And become regularly successful.

Amazing little animals.

Hey Pauly, How about keeping your mouth shut. Not sure if you joined up here just to troll every Kamloops local or if you are just an idiot. Keep you spots and sightings to your self and your group. If I was your buddy and told you I saw a WT then found out you are telling EVERYONE I would be pissed. Common sense man.....
Plus Lolo is indian land now. The Gov gave it to the band so sending 1000 guys there is a real dick move.

Hunter numbers are down 2.2 million in the last 10 years in the states. I’m sure it’s no better in Canada. All that lost revenue in licensing is lost habitat funding. In bc our lakes are stocked only because of license sales. I’ve lived and trapped and hunted and fished in Kamloops all my life theirs plenty of game to be had . If you want to leave your truck that is. Most don’t now a days. We need hunter recruiting or our resource will be in trouble. We’re all Canadian you bitch about lower mainland hunters! How do you think the Fort St. John locals feel about us going up and shooting all their moose deer and elk?? Sounds hypocritical to me. Out of town brings $$ to our economy it’s all good😃

Thank god for free speech. I’m no troll just an advocate for all hunters. I was unaware about lolo being reserve now. I never get out that way. My buddies don’t care lol we’re all tagged out anyway. I believe in helping other hunters to be successful kinda my duty. I’m older now and I feel it’s important to pass on the torch to the younger crowd.. it’s important believe me hunting is a wonderful sport we all need to be less selfish and start mentoring and being helpful especially with the way the world is going now. But what the hell do I know

don’t sweat it. He’s just tender that you gave out where he hunts. Think I might go stomp around there tomorrow afternoon and see what I can drum up! Will post the gps coordinates of the whitetail if I find them ^^

Most of them just drive around and say there is no game left anyways . But i agree the internet and peoples mouths have ruined some really goo spots that had to be found the old school way . Its as easy as some key words and pressing go now adays . Some areas are still off the map tho and im sure lots will stay that way. Ive learned to keep my mouth shut even to close "friends" .

I took my 72 year old father out this morning to try and fill his last whitetail tag. He filled it all the while as we sat 400 yards of the main road and listened to all the hunters drive by. I could list a thousand areas around Kamloops for whitetail.. not spots. Nobody walks anywhere any more. In fact I haven’t bumped into a single hunter this year in the woods and I rarely see parked rigs anymore. Which is great.

Hey guys,

I know this is out of the blue, but I was reading this forus and wondering if anyone had any tips. I'm pretty new to hunting and have never hunted whitetail before. I'm headed up to my parents cabin with a friend for almost a week where I've found some nice sized whitetail sheds but have yet to see one. There are parts where the forest is pretty open and has some grass clearings, there is a natural spring on one side, some dense forest, and a swamp area. Have seen lots of mule deer just walking around the forrest and lots of deer sign but no whitetail.

How would you go abouts hunting them? Where should I start? Should I try still hunting? Sitting in a clearing with sign and waiting? Any calling or rattling? Is the rut in full effect already?

There have also been cow moose on the property and would love to shoot a spike if you had any pointers for that too but from what I hear it's pretty rare. Or any tips on getting a 4 point muley would also be appreciated. Hoping to fill the freezer this year.

Cheers,

Aiden
