Just got back from a week out in the north end of region 3 with a bunch of good buddies.
trip I look forward to all year long . Been hunting for 5 years with no success until a few weeks ago when I got a bear. I was optimistic as I felt I was over the “buck fever”.
i felt wrong LOL.
first morning up bright and early hiking up the power lines , bashing through the bottom of cutlines we made the 4km to the top of the hill. Only one doe spotted. Sign EVERYWHERE.
after a couple hours we contemplated turning back to head down for some kibbles but started the “corner” game .
Just one more corner
just over that ridge
just one more corner.
a few corners later and we came out to a deactivated area we just had to walk down to see all the tree lines .
upon looking down the hill I notice a single doe ! Cool ! I start taking some photos just to notice a second doe . Even better . The rest of the group walks over and spots two more does .
we sit and watch and buddy says he sees antlers . I check all 4 does again and see nothing .
I let them know none of the four deer have antlers .
They say there’s 5 deer.
F*** me sideways their is a fifth deer down at the bottom .
The buck fever instantly kicked in and I’m shaking . He’s walking to the tree line and I can’t get steady enough for a moving shot and he disappears.
it was a long walk back to camp. 4km and 1500ft of elevation.
our day consisted of cutting our wood for the week and enjoying some lawn chairs with lunch.
that afternoon we headed out in the truck to drive a portion of the way up the hill and hike in to where we saw the back and sit .
walked in and got cozy on a big stump glassing around.
A good friend and experienced hunter spots the buck down below a few minutes later .
Weve been hunting for 5 years together or so and he has harvested a few animals so he let me take the shot knowing it would be my first deer .
we all go quiet and a few seconds go by... Boom. Dropped on the spot double lung and hit the spine.
To say I was pumped would be an understatement . We grabbed our packs and a few celebratory brewskis and headed downhill to view .
what I thought was just a spiker is actually a small 2 point .
The extra point required an extra brewski celebration.
tag cut - dirty work done - tied up and ready for a drag.
according to our gps it was a 125yd drag ( to the top of the hill not the truck) and 400 ft in elevation.
thank god for good help . Hour and a half later we were at the truck and cleaned up.
skinned by 630 that night and then the brews were flying .
Another good friend rolled into camp that night jokingly asking where our deer was .
He didn’t believe me till he saw it lol . I don’t think he expected that.
awesome trip for everybody and learned a lot !

cheers and happy hunting !
Can someone post up some photos for me ? 😁

Congrats! Good thing you had your buddies with you to help get the deer up the hill and back to the truck. Had you been on your own you may have cursed yourself for taking a downhill shot like that but by the photo that shows your age I'm sure you could have handled it what with the adrenalin of it being your first buck. Once you get to my age and hunting solo you start putting how tough the extraction of the animal will be into the equation before pulling the trigger! LOL

I agree . It could have been a heck of a lot worse ! Especially if the logs were wet and slippery in that cut . Nothing’s impossible but would definetly think twice with a bigger animal and late in the day shots .

You’ll get it next time pops !
And yes the same freezer bag that carried the full beers from the truck took out the empties .
unfortunetly I lost my knife somewhere along the trek .
