My son and I were out riding our motorcycles this weekend here he is with his new to him KLX140G dirt bike and his Rem 870 Youth 20 gauge first grouse he has ever shot with it.

I was out for an early morning deer hunt + was running my dogs this morning.

Saw a deer gut pile but no live deer I did see a couple grouse so I popped one at 70 yards used my 14" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 338JDJ #2 loaded with 200gr SST's @ 2350fps yes smacked it in the neck.

I've shot a few with my Ruger 10/22 but took a liking to Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge with #4 - #5, 1 & 1/8oz shot... works much better for winging them and shooting them out of trees than the 22 :)

always used a 12 gauge mod choke and 7 1/2...trick was to aim high and only get the head with a couple of bb's....know your spray pattern and you will not be picking lead out of the meat...

ps….always nice to see the next gen of hunters

I kinda liked the way my late Father In Law used to hunt them - with a hockey stick.
He would say "they don't call them fool hens for nothing."

Baikal O/U ejector 12 gauge does the trick for me. I enjoy shooting them in the air.

have killed them with, 410, 20 ga, 12 ga, arrows, rocks, stick, the truck.....currently using a VERY accurate .22LR to pick the heads off....nice clean breast with no bullet holes that way! to be fair, the rocks and sticks method also leaves no bullet holes but my arm just aint what it used to be!!

if it's dedicated grouse hunt with the dog and a friend then 28ga sxs and second gun is 12ga with slugs on hand...if it's solo then 12ga with slugs in back pocket ....I have found the gun shot = grizzly dinner bell theory to be accurate

truck hunting grouse while cruising around then usually 22lr

reading other stories sometimes I feel like I must hunt the most educated grouse....I think ruffed are the smartest, they take off quickly....sprucies will stay around a good while, and blues are the absolute dumbest

I have 2 that I really like, a M42 Winchester and a 555 Stevens in 28ga. I’m partial to the Stevens as it’s a bit cheaper to shoot, but the Winchester fits like a glove.

Usually my cz 455canadian. Hopefully maybe next year a browning over under 20g.
The last 5 grouse if killed though I’ve just thrown a branch at them.

9' 6wt, floating line and a Black Woolly Bugger on a size 4 2XL

You would be surprised how eager the forest chickens take to fly hooks.

You would be even more thrilled with the fight they put up on against a 6wt rod.

Try it before you knock it.

The plus is you can enjoy catch and release - not so much with a .22 or shotgun.

The tough part is getting a clean back cast in the forest - more practical on the better dirt roads.

10/22 or (my long time favorite) BL-22

Head shots (mostly) with open sights on both guns.

.44 Rossi ranch hand, hard cast trailboss loads. Got 5 in the last outing. In previous years I used my 1902 3030 with hard cast. Hardly ever take the 22 out anymore, sold all my shotguns.

I finally potted one a couple days ago with the most unlucky 10-22 known to man kind. It was kinda nice to finally put on on the board with the damn thing there'd been a few misses in its recent past. But the grouse folded from a shot right through one side of its breast  Maybe I should upgrade from its $20 4 power "scope". lol. Its weird it'll shoot OK quite a bit but just not consistently.
I've got a Savage mk11 bull barrel that shoots bugs eyes but when its time to grab a two-two for a hunt the heavy Savage usually takes the back seat to the light and handy 10-22 as its deer I'm focused on anyway.

If you got one it might be the second most unlucky 10-22 but my gun has the crown for now.

If it possible, why would it be illegal? Harassing wildlife? Chickens go crazy after insects.

late last year I refurbished the rubber and leather on my wrist rocket and picked up a bag of marbles from the dollar store...had it out for the kids to use a few times this summer and I am thinking it might be used on a chicken or two this year...

Usually use a 12g for birds.

Also would you mind posting some pictures on your dirt bike setup? I've been thinking about using my dirt bike for hunting but haven't figured out how to get all my gear on it.

20 gauge #6’s, no pellets left in the meat with 20 yard shots. Nice to take them on the fly, or shoot them out of trees without worrying where your bullet is going to go.

10/22 with yellow jackets.
Or a chiappa little badger with the same.
Occasionally an 870.
The chiappa is strapped to my pack when I'm hiking, the 10/22 is in the truck...the shotgun is really rarely used.

Solo, 10/22 with Nikon scope for the head shots, and when with the dogs, Mossberg 930 semi auto 12 gauge with target #7 1/2 loads. Hard to hit em on the wing with the .22!

CZ 455 Lux in .17 HMR, with a variety ammo, topped with a Bushnell 4200 Elite 3-9x40, head shots a must otherwise the bird explodes if body shot.

A number of years ago my son was getting pretty handy with a slingshot and marbles.
