Midway through my mountain goat hunt in 6-14 / 6-16. We’ve battled through historically terrible weather, washed out trails, poor visibility, and multiple grizzly encounters for the first five days.

All of the goats seem to be at the very top of the mountain, often feeding on vibrant green grassy patches with southern aspect. Is this typical?

The terrain we are hunting is extremely steep, making approaching those areas really challenging or outright impossible.

That is very typical for early season
there is no reason for them to come down to make easier on you until the weather or breeding time comes around

X2, very challenging time of year to hunt goats.

See most of them up high in the breeze. Look for dirt beds as they'll shower themselves in dirt to keep the bugs down. If it''s smoking hot they'll get into some shadows where it''s cooler. Last light I usually see them on the ridges where it's breezy.

All worked out today! Clambered 1000 feet up steep slope, crawled out on an exposed ridge, and made the 120 meter shot. Billy went about 2/3 of the way down. Goat was fully intact, broke one horn off about half way. Awesome day.
