Hey everyone

Been a while since I've made the drive up into Northern BC. Are there any issues with fuel stops when driving through the night North of Prince George on the way to Fort Nelson?

Vehicle we are taking has an expected range of 480km ish and no convenient way to pack extra fuel.

We plan on doing the drive straight without stopping so 24hr service stations are a must.

Thanks for the info..

I see there are a variety of Smith Fuel Services Cardlocks on the way to Ft Nelson.... Can anyone buy fuel at those Cardlocks with the invention of "pay at the pump" or does it need to be pre arranged dealio and only available to commercial trucks?

I don't believe just anyone can use a card lock but I'd have to believe there is a 24 hour station in PG, Chetwynd, FSJ (Maybe Wonowon) and then obviously Fort Nelson.

I do know there is not a 24 hr gas station in Fort Nelson. We got there just after 11 pm last year and had to sleep in the truck till 6 am before we could continue on. I would think you could find one in fsj though.

Good question. We generally stop over in Chetwynd on our way up to Ft Nelson, but we're usually there before 8pm.
There's 24 hour fuel in PG and John, so if Chetwynd has one you should be golden if Ft Nelson is your destination.

Card locks require an account and special card.

If you leave in the morning, you have to drive half of the road in the night with no fuel station open. However, if you leave in the night, you will reach Prince George in the early morning, then you have twelve hours daytime driving till your destination

you can work the normal hours before leaving.

We will be proceeding west of Ftor Nelson...so fuel there would also be needed.

Our window depends on us leaving at 6am ....12hr drive to PG makes us there at 6pm.....if Ft Nelson doesnt have 24hr fuel then thats a real problem.

We run up north near that area in 3 trucks, each has a slip tank of 300L. Some fuel stops are unreliable, if you go cassian like bell 2.

Or at least some fuel as a backup

iirc the Esso in Ft N is 24 hour, Toad closes at 9?ish
Chetwynd has 24 hr, take the Braydon cutoff, FSJ has 24hr

Having a PetroPass for cardlocks saves some grief

I phoned the esso in Ft Nelson and although the google machine says they are open 24hr...they say they are not.

And it turns out I dont have enough time to get a petro pass card...

Might have to catch a nap in ft nelson for a couple hours until they open

480km range? Small tank or gas guzzler?

If timing is critical, maybe drive an hour west to Tetsa , they open early, and have a good breakfast.

this sounds like someone who has a serious case of sheep fever and the only remedy is to get to the hike in ASAP with no wasted time

one option is to call a small business that makes a few $$ on hunters passing through and pay to leave a few jerry cans full of gas for you (with a tip of course). The place at Tetsa might do it? Toad River?

What if you went through radium and ice field parkway? You might get to PG faster than 12 hrs. Not sure on the 24 hr fuel. You could also skip pg and go through Alberta.

Thanks guys...rough schedual puts us in Ft Nelson at 3am...gas opens at 5am....considering im just coming off nightshift and then driving 24 hrs...a couple hours sleep waiting for gas isnt the end of the world..if we think we can make it to Tetsa then we might risk it...we'll have a good idea on the actual range by then.

Todbartell its a small tank but buddy says it should do 550 per tank.

Just try not to fuel up in Pink Mountain- that guy is a frigging scheister. Charges as much or more than downtown Van for gas. I bring jerries just to get me past him.

Just came back from Toad River. If there is no 24 hour service in Fort Nelson the last place with one would be Fort St John. FYI the fuel in Fort Nelson was cheaper than Fort St John. Not sure about Toad River price but it will definitely be cheaper than Muncho. Toad River closes at 9PM. The only place that might be open later is Wonowon.

Not sure about 24 hr. Gas was 1.21 in Ft Nelson. Jerry cans would be handy there as gas sky rockets north of there. Toad gas was $$$.

Warm delicious cinnamon buns in Tetsa! A must buy.

Bring enough jerry cans for a full fill up. Once your passed john the world is on a different schedule.

480km range? Small tank or gas guzzler?

I have had a couple newer full-size company vehicles over the last few years and have not been impressed with the fuel consumption. My Dodge 5.7 3500 is lucky to get 20l per 100km with a trailer, and the Chev wasn't much better.

They did great in top gear with a tail wind and no load, sometimes down to 13l/100km, but left me estimating full tank range off highway at close to 400km in 4wd.

Friends with newer half tons seem to do much better, but don't have the capacity, etc.

So if I had to guess he is driving a full size RAM 3500 with a 5.7 gas engine, and has about the same range I do.

I've boycotted this gas station. Arrogance at it's highest at that location...
