So I just got into hunting last year, and my grandpa gave me my first rifle. It’s a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06. I’ve read that their quality went downhill in 1993, and I checked the serial numbers and my rifle was made in... 1993. Anything you guys could recommend to help me improve the rifle? Is it worth it? It’s a little heavier than I would like as mountain hunting is the hunting that has interested me the most. Thanks!

Make sure to check if the safety needs to be replaced. There are a bunch of models that have a potentially faulty safety mechanism. Model 700 is a part of that group but I don't know the years. I have a model 660 I believe and had the gun fire when I was releasing the safety so it does happen, thankfully I had my gun pointed safely. I never knew why it had happened until years later, there was a documentary about it. Don't use it any more and will get it fixed one day. They fix them for free but definitely figure if yours needs to be fixed.

First off your pretty lucky getting your Grampa's rifle so you better look after it, as Ride Red says below go shoot it first and see how it is, obviously served your Grampa well.

If you're concerned with the trigger take it to a gunsmith and have cleaned and adjusted to 3 lbs, or replace it if you're so inclined, and since its at the gunsmiths have it bedded and thoroughly cleaned and then go shoot it.

They are a good rifle, its a great caliber and it will serve you well.

Put some holes in paper at the range first; you might not have anything to worry about.

Having your Grandpa's rifle is something you will never forget. My Gramps gave me his 0ld M 94 30 WCF. It was like he was with me on every hunt when I used it. I just passed it down to his Great Grandson. I agree, have it looked at by a competent gunsmith. Listen to his recommendations as to what else should be done. I like a 3-3.5 lb trigger for a hunting rifle. Where are you I'm sure someone will have a recommendation for a Gunsmith in your area. Most of all enjoy, treasure and look after Grandpa's rifle it wil mean even more to you in the years to come.

Thanks for the responses. I live in Langley, I have heard Gary Flach is the guy to get to go over your guns. I will get on that

Get the trigger adjusted and have him bed the action/float the barrel at the same time.

700's are great rifles.

You need to be comfortable with what you are shooting. If you don't have confidence, you won't shoot as well so if you are sentimental and confident in your firearm, have fun and enjoy. If you won't be happy with it and it will always bother you, get what you want and can afford. The calibre is a great calibre and can knock down anything. Watched my dad drop plenty with the 30-06. Prefer the 7mm Rem Mag myself but each to their own.

Nice, those are really good old scopes.
Bought my very first Leupold in the early 90's - Vari-x II 3-9x40 - and that scope has seen/done some things...a 40 km/h tumble off a quad on its fourth outting, being the most memorable.

Still holds zero and is still in service.

If the guy was SHOPPING for a new rifle, this post might be appropriate.

Definitely NOT in the context of this thread, though...

Not sure of your age or shooting experience, Beau, but for an all around rifle that can reliable kill anything on this continent with the right bullet and decent shot placement, you'd be hard pressed to find a better, 'Do it All' cartridge than the '06.

To me, the OP sounded hesitant and POSSIBLY considering his options, especially regarding the weight. Maybe he could cut the barrel down or cut the butt end of the stock off rather than looking for a lighter weight gun such as a Tikka? Lol. Thanks for your input regarding my comment though. I could throw in that not everyone is sentimental and gives a crap about a gun passed down. I know that I didn't hang on to any guns based on feelings and had no sleepless nights after I sold them. Everyone is different and to some, holding on to heirlooms is special. No judgement from me. Hope the OP loves his gun and has lots of good memories. You will always remember your first gun no matter where it came from.

Then I feel sorry for you because with all my family mentors now gone the guns that were passed down to me mean so much now they are all gone. I would say you are in a small minority and That makes me sad for you.

That’s a great gun to have. If you get into hunting more you can always add a light weight rig to the stable. I’d hang onto that sucker, what’s the worst that could happen? There’s no law saying you can’t mountain hunt with a wood rifle.

I have the same gun in 25 06 ....as it is a lighter caliber , I used it on yotes and deer , absolute tack driver . Mine is about 10 years older with a 4-12 Bushnell and I haven't adjusted it since I got it in 1984 . (was used then ) only knock is that now I am older I don't like packing that almost 12 lbs . I recommend a a nice strap , wide and padded ?

Thanks, all. I’m definitely going to keep it. When I said “is it worth it” I meant customizing the rifle. I should have been more clear. Thanks for the help, I’m going to contact a gunsmith to give it a good once over.

Pity Party
Thanks for trying to hijack that guy's thread and to attack me. I really don't need your pity but thanks anyways. I am entitled to my opinion and it will be shared. Rest assured, I sold my family's guns and couldn't sleep better. Next time, keep your pity for someone that gives a crap about your opinions. I got no use for computer warriors. Keep it civil and respectful. Thanks

Seriously? You must be having a bad day or something. #1I did not hijack anything I merely replied to a post you made expressing my(and Id bet at least 80% of other owners) who have had a special firerm passed down to them by friends or family. #2, there was nothing disrespectful in my post, I truly do feel sorry for anyone who does not understand and appreciate what it is like to be entrusted with an item any item that was once held dear by another. Things are passed down out of love and respect and to poo poo that trust is IMO disrespectful to the OP and the great gift he was trusted to keep in the family. Not once did I degrade or disrespect you for your feelings (or the lack there of) I only stated how sad it made me that people put monetary value higher than the trust given to someone when beloved items are passed down to them. Do you get the reason behind PM now Beau?

Don't worry to much about the weight. Lots of animals have died in the mountains from lead out of rRemington 700's. I would have it gone over and use it and keep it even if you find a newer lighter rifle to use. Never know who you might have a chance to pass it on to.

I am having a good day. Always funny to laugh at a computer warrior. If you read my post, I stated quite clearly that it was my opinion and that I don't judge. You have decided to judge, not once but twice. Well I guess I am the one that feels sorry for you. Have a good weekend computer warrior!

My gun that has done some serious killing is the Remington 700 BDL Mountain Rifle in 30-06 topped with a beat to shit Leupold 3x9-40mm.
This rifle has been dropped and dumped more than a psychotic Portugese girlfriend.

Killed some big bulls and some MD into the mid 200's with it.

I will say this......
Give a true and invested hunter a 3-03 british and cheap scope that knows how to hunt and he will always crush it compared to guys that obsess about equipment over knowledge and time invested.

Shit golfers that keep upgrading to better equipment every yr that don't invest in being better will always be shit golfers.

Beau, you use that rifle with pride.
Feel honored to carry it.

I have one, not certain on the year and it has served me fine. I would not mess with it at all if it is putting rounds where you want them.

I have several Remington 700's in different calibers. Definitely one of my rifles of choice. The flaw with the safety in them is discussed in the documentary "Remington Under Fire". One relatively simple way to tell if yours is one of the affected models is if you have to disengage the safety before you can operate the bolt (load/unload), if you can operate the bolt with the safety on it should be ok.
