View Full Version : Moose Down!

After running around all day, the wife and I come home around 6pm...I say to her, 'Grab the 410, lets go get some chickens'....She says to me, 'Bring the rifle just in case'.

So we load up the truck and decide to head out for the last hour of sunshine(well, daylight). We hit one of the FSR's close to home and we are hunting in 10 minutes.

Heading up the FSR for about 17 km, we finally see a chicken. I load up the 410 and squeeze off a shot. Damnit, missed. Oh well, its new and I am not used to it I keep saying as the wife snickers.

We continue on about another 4-5km and get out to take a stomp through the bush. I let out a couple of calls, and since its about 7pm now, we start heading out.

We drive maybe 300 yards and are moving along at a good clip, hell I dont like driving these things in the dark, especially when its wet. The wife lets out a 'HOLY MOOSE".

I jump on the binders and notice 2 standing about 75 yards away in a cut. No antlers damnit, its a cow and a calf. Waiiiiiiiit a minute, thats a big calf. Hand me the binos. I have a look as these things are staring at me.

Cant tell, turn your head damnit. I said to the wife, you have a look...
she cant tell either.

After 1-2 minutes, they turn to walk away, so I let out a quick call. The bigger of the 2 stops and turns to face me. Hmmm...time for another look...Glass it again and this time it puts its ears down and turns its head.

ANTLERS! HAND ME THE RIFLE!

Quickly loading, this guy walks away to about 90 yards and is giving me nothing but the Texas Heart shot so I call again. He stops and gives me the broadside....

BOOM! ....he shudders, jumps and staggers about 20 yards away before collapsing. After 5 minutes we walked up and said our thankyou's and then jumped for joy.

Completely out of velvet, each side is about 8 inches long, his left spike has a 'drop' that it touching his eyebrow about 2 inches long.

1 shot from my 7mm Rem Mag with 160 gr Triple Shok took out a shoulder, lung and exploded the heart. I am impressed with the performance, needless to say.

First moose and the mythical spike.

Down at 715 pm and home by 930....damn, I love it up here ;)

PS- Thanks for the help Bro- Kevin21

Hm, well that's the beauty of living up country.

"We hit one of the FSR's close to home and we are hunting in 10 minutes."

And,

"Down at 715 pm and home by 930....damn, I love it up here"

In the Lower Mainland, that's maybe enough time to load the truck for the trip up country, lol.

I'm starting my move to Burns Lake next week and hope to have similar success in the near future. As an aside it sounds like you have a thoughtful well trained wife and that you both enjoy being up in "God's Country".
