So, thinking ahead to the coming season, I was wondering how the fall 2018 elk hunting went in the Chetwynd area.

Does anyone have any reports to share?

Buddy and me are debating whether to go that way or to the Kootenays.

The Elk Valley in the East Kootenay is very low on numbers for elk. My son who is an avid elk hunter did not buy a tag last fall . That's how bad it is around the east Koots.

The elk numbers were down for sure last year in chetwynd as lots of locals didn’t fill tags. It will be very interesting this year

I would wait untill the Government decides which area's will be closed down for this Caribou recovery.
Supposed to be meetings from the 1st to the 4th of April up here.
Hopefully we will have a better idea on whats ahead for us

And then on top of that, who knows how it goes with forest fires potentially this summer.
Who knows what closed?? in September anyways.

wild one. is correct. there were probably 10 hunters where i was all on quads (except me) went home with nothing. to be successful at elk hunting get off the quad and beat the brush or make friends with someone who owns a large chunk of private farm land lol.

Why would Elk hunting be closed for Caribou recovery?

so far they claim hunting won't be affected, but due to the lack of transparency around the proposal there is a lot of skepticism

Forty years ago their were no Elk around Chetwynd , you had to go down (up) the Sukunka , preferably on horse back. I remember drawing a track I found at work with a "What's this ?" The old timers were amazed . Lately Elk have been hammered, ranchers don't appreciate what they do to the winter hay.

Where exactly is the caribou recovery area and is it in full effect?

How about moose in that area on decline or staying pretty stable?
