I just got back today from a 5-day hunt in 7-08. Just in the early stages of the rut. I watched a nice 4X4 with long tines scrub down a little pine tree until all the bark was gone. He didn't see me watching...when he did he decided to walk to within 20 yards. I wasn't sure what he was going to do (I had once charge me before!). We were doing the OK corral stare down when the barb wire fence behind me went 'twang'. With that I turned to see a huge black bear at 15 yards run across my path. As the moose kept his eye on where the bear was going...I slowly walked away. If I had a LEH I could have filled in the first 20 minutes of the first day as I saw a bull and a cow together. And then again an hour later with another bull.
Tried some called but all was quiet!

I use an early rut call. Works every time. Dont use a full rut call yet. Go with the early and you'll do fine.

Nothing really, I just like to sound like I know what I'm doing. I would say after the 10th of september they should show some interest. Like everything though it can be day to day, prime rut or not.

Best of luck!

The rut is on now had two calling back tonight but it was windy as heck and they would not show. That darn wind was swirling too much. Lots of sign they are rutting as well, tore up bush, found a couple starts on wallows. It just keeps getting better.

It is all the young ones practising right now, the wanna be's, end of the month and the first week of October the big boys will come and give the young ones some serious lessons. Mike

yup you are right it's the young ones that go into rut first, I don't even think they know what's going on they just know they gotta come and see what is causing that feeling in their happy zone!

so what would I be expecting for rutting activoty in the second week of october? will the moose start to not react to calling ? will they be harder to spot?

morris

We were up the second week of October 2 years ago and it was almost the end of the rut. they were still coming to the call but not like last year in the first week of October....we leave next saturday for our Oct1st -15 draw. Lots of success last year around the 4th- 6th of October, but areas do differ.

Any where with in the first two weeks of October will bring in bulls, cows and cows with calves to the call. As in any part of the rut they will all react different some will sneak in others will come running with snot dripping from their noses itching for a fight or an intimate encounter, no two will be the same. I find that the cows get a bit more vocal during this time frame as well.

October 2nd last year I called in a young bull, but had cut my tag 3 weeks prior. He was grunting and thrashing up a storm

I had a bull respond last night to grunting. But should still be a week or two away.

most guys just use their voice, a plus to that is in rarely freezes up, and can never be forgotten back at the truck or quad

but if you insist on a call, Primos, Knight & Hale, Carlton, and Buck Expert all make moose calls that do both bull grunts and cow moans

Anyone ever have luck cow calling during the rut and having a immature come in? Just wondering if its worth it during open immy season? Rob

moosecaller

When you call bulls come in regardless of their size, you will get big and little alike coming to a call. Cows will also come in and some have calves in tow. This is moose talking it goes on all year this is how they communicate and locate each other. During the rut both sexes become more vocal. An immature will come in he may not fully grasp the whole concept but he will come. Later on in the season if a young one has gotten a beating from a bigger bull he may be a little shy, so calling like a cow or cow and calf will tempt the younger fellow in.

Oh ya, there ruttin. I was in a hury yesterday morning before work to check an area out that I grunted a bull to the night before. I crashed through the bush cow calling and walked to within a hundred yards of a 2 point browsing away. Didnt even care about the noice coming toward him. That was a mistake!

When the moose are in full rut, you can pretty much grunt, fart, caugh or whatever and they'll come, they got two things on their mind, fighting and well you know.

Have done it a few times. Try calling with the odd different pitch (mimicking more than one). I have had 2 or 3 immy's come into a call over the years. Be forewarned......SHOOT QUICK because if you happen to get a reply from a 'real bull' the immy will start to panic realizing his pubescent "grunt" just ain't gonna cut it.
