Went out yesterday for a solo backpack trip into some really awesome highcountry. GPS said I was 4 kms as the crow flys from the truck.

Looks like some unreal alpine Steve!.....Did you lay the smack down on a big ole toad up there or what? That be where they live this time of year!

Now you can see he ain't the monster billy that I've been dreamin about. But....this is my 7th tag in 13 years and I ain't killed a goat. This country is tuff just to see a goat let alone kill one. In 2005 I came the closest I've ever been to killing one, just missed him. I figure I don't seem to have difficulty drawing tags, so I'll hunt that booner another year. When I saw this billy yesterday he was over 800 metres away. I figured if I could stalk in on him and get nice and close, he'd do for my first goat. The stalk was painfully slow as the talus was very loose and I feared rolling rocks would alert the billy. I never looked at the time, but I estimate the stalk took me about 45 mins. I used the lay of the land to shield me from the goat. There were rock outcrops that I was able to keep in between me and him. I had one big rock pegged that I wanted to get too. It would put me about 50 metres from the bedded billy. In the last 20 metres of the stalk, I slipped on the talus and rolled a rock down the steep slope. I couldn't see the billy as the big rock was in the way. I stood still for the longest time just listening to see if I could hear him. When I felt things had calmed down, I edged my way up to the big rock. Just as I peaked over, I heard a rock roll and saw the billy 50 metres above me. He must have heard me slip. He was ready to make his escape and I took no time settling in and hammering him. He dropped and rolled about 50 metres before piling up.
While he is a small billy, I am very happy to end my 'no goat' streak. The HUNT means way more to me than horn size. There is just something about doing a solo hunt in country like this and having it all work out. It is very satisfying. The pack was very heavy and the 4kms back to the truck was a severe grunt, but well worth it.

Dana, That is awesome! I hear what you are saying about being up in that type of terrain, self-sufficient (for a couple days at least!) and making a great stalk work out. Congratulations. Hopefully one day I can do the same.

How did the J105 work out?

harbinger,
This was my first trip looking for goat this year and I only had the day. Had a head lamp, so I planned to hunt until evening if I needed too. I killed the billy about 1:30 in the afternoon. Just as I killed him the weather got really nasty. Fog rolled in and it started snowing. Then rain/snow mix. Couldn't even see 10 feet in front of me as I started down the mountain. Slow and steady was the game. No need to fall and hurt myself. It pretty much poured the whole trip back to the truck.

Sitka,
The J105 is awesome. I love it! It really hugs the body well and doesn't throw ya off balance on that slippery talus. With other packs my shoulders and back would be hurting the next day. Today, I feel really good. My knees are a tad sore, but that is just from digging into the talus.

It's amazing the country you can get yourself into just 4 K's from the road! Nice work on the goat success.

This season is gonna be good! The amount of bucks and chit that I've seen is killer. Last Saturday still hurts. I missed a huge LEH bull TWICE, and to think a huge Muley is only about a third of the size! I better not pull that chit again..

OrangeThunder,
I thought you'd recognize that country.
Horshur is right, I am a bit of a wimp. The thought of doing a stupid-ass solo pack out like he did last year made me weak in the knees and sick to the stomach. ;) At least I have pics and my billy didn't break his horns. :) I did hope that big billy would be back in there this year, but given how rugged that terrain is, he could have just been hanging out in the glacier on the other side of the mountain for all I know. Amazing what kind of country those critters call home. I have a couple of buddies with the same draw unit, so we'll see if we can locate that big billy for one of them. My buddy Thad is bringing his bow. I was definately within bow range on mine. It would be awesome to film him creeping up on a big P&Y goat.

Maverick,
Thanks for the comment. Feel free to use it as a screen saver. We have that pic as a screen saver on our computer right now.

Tuffer,
Spill the goods. Huge bull??? We need the story. You still up for the big buck contest?

Keep us posted on the goat action. I was pretty disappointed that there weren't any at our choosen lake this year up north. Might have to go to McBride to get my fix:?.

How did PP do up north for the youth season? I haven't heard anything.

Orange Thunder,
PP didn't have any luck up North. With moose season coming on here, hopefully he learned his lesson from last season and buys a moose tag this year eh? Would hate to run into two Immys on the way to work and have him sit on his hands again. LOL!

You bet I'll buy you a magazine subscription. I got an email from Muley Crazy Magazine today and they want to put your buck in their Young Bucks section of the magazine. What do you think of that eh?

Get him life size mounted, I just got one back last month and it looks greaT. Your taxidermist can put him on a rock climbing at an incline and you can mount the rock base to a wall or have a floor mounted base if you don't have any wall space left.
Congrats!
I have read and allways maintain that they are North Americas most dangerous game. One slip when you are going after them and your a gonner!

Sweet country, and great photos...he should be tender.

Was the nanny pissed?

dana
10-05-2007, 09:12 PM
LOL! Nope, no nanny was near him, maybe she was killed by the many wolves that were putting tracks in that country. And yup, he is very tender. Thinking I now have a new favorite game meat.

StoneChaser
10-05-2007, 09:20 PM
Yup...they are one of my favorite meats as well. I've heard they can get pretty skunky, but I've only eaten a few (same as Caribou...the bull my buddy got this year was as good as any sheep I've eaten, but I've heard nightmare stories when they're rutting).
