Is it easier to hunt bison in Oct when they’ve had no hunting pressure or in January when you can track in the snow?

We were up end of January. Hunted hard, came up empty. Great trip.

Advantage of January - Snow.
Disadvantage of January - Cold.

If you had the choice would you choose October or January? Both seem to have advantages and disadvantages

Thanks for the replies. The question had come up whether to go for October or January draw. Hunting partner figures October and I say January. Glad to see some were successful in the late draw. This info may help with our choice. Thanks

Normally cold in January, but no guaranteed. Run sleds into Hammett’s ranch in the Sikanni on Jan 9. Morning of Jan 10 was minus 20, but warmed up mid-morning to near zero. Warn on Jan11 with rain showers. Saw about 12 Bison on the 10th but did not connect. These Bison were in the area accessible by ATV. Harvested a young cow on the11th, West of the ATV area using sleds. The January time frame also for expanding the area that you can access

The hunt in January can be hard, you need to understand how to hunt them, how to track them and what their habits are. As soon as they hear a sled they usually move into the timber, that being said if you know whats fresh sign you can usually catch up to them. When I went in January it hit 12 degrees and all the creeks opened up. It made access via sleds a challenge, I think only 1 group was successful that last 2 weeks of jan when we were there.

They charge $175/day for cabins with includes 3 meals per day hot breakfast and dinner, bagged lunch. Not sure what next season will bring, unfortunatly Mike Hammett passed away and operation may be sold.

Sas to hear of Mikes passing. It’s an amazing service at the ranch. We took 2 bison January 16/17
