Does anyone remember what day the draws went in last year and when the results were released? Only been 5 days this year and already finding myself checking online every couple hours LOL

Not sure, curious myself though as I put in for the Haida Gwaii bear...assuming they draw at the same time.

My son and I are planning our first sheep hunt for 2020. I have been applying for the early sheep draw for years with no luck. This year we both put in for the Tat. 6-29.

We decided to try for the early draw and if we win we will do it this year. We have all the gear and know what we are doing for next year so we just decided to go big or go home.

Many members have been very helpful with planning for our 2020 hunt.
These draws are longshots but seem to be amazing adventures with or without success.

Good luck to all!!

Seems more and more people are missing the early draw with no g-bear draw.

Last Friday myself, my brother and our buddy quickly burned over to the government office while we were having lunch. Almost missed it.

My dad and I missed it last year due to the no grizz draw, it wasn’t gonna happen again this year!! Lol. 3 of us put in for 6-27, hunted it a couple times before, some gorgeous country up there.

My wife and Dad were drawn for their second choice (Spatsizi 6-20A). I was unsuccesful for my Dall sheep draw. Any tips or information from members who have had the Spatsizi draw feel free to send me a DM (much appreciated). Would like to see my dad be successful as his body is aging and sheep hunting with his son and daughter-in-law days are numbered.

Thanks,

Well we got a daw, and now I need info!!! How to convince a lady friend that a sheep hunt is more important then a Mexico holiday, any info would be muchly appreciated as Iv never put in for this argument before. How’s the weather normally when a guy brings up this kind of conversation? What kind of gear should I bring? Chocolate? Wine? I’m not looking for a honey hole, just a loop hole.

how come BC does their draws so late compared to other places? Would sure be nice to have LEH results by April so a guy has time to plan / re plan hunts based on draw results. All my longer hunts are already planned for 2021.

I suspect it will wind up being like last year - the land border will still be open, and as long as you can show you're not staying in the territory for more than 24hrs you'll be fine. If you're taking a float plane from Whitehorse you'll just have to ensure you've got everything lined up to account for that. Not sure what would happen in the event of a weather delay...

wish we had a point system.

A point system is a terrible idea! We are so much better off with a lottery. “Point creep” is a real thing and it wouldn’t take long before it is virtually impossible to draw. Look at every jurisdiction that has a point system, every year it takes longer and longer to draw. Every year, more hunters, less animals. Longer draw times.

Bullreaper

We need a hybrid system.

Yep. What about once you are drawn, you cannot put in for that species again for say, 3 years? Or like some states, results are out early enough, if you are drawn, you have a certain amount of days to decide if you want to keep the tag or return it, in case of circumstances where you can’t make the hunt or whatever, Then they just redraw that tag, and you can apply again the next year. A point system is not the answer at all, just ask 99% of the people who are on points systems.

bangbangkhan

Its already impossible to draw an elk on the island...i like the sound of the system below.

Bonus points

Montana has a bonus point system in place for all special permits (deer, elk, antelope, sheep, moose and mountain goat). Every year that you are unsuccessful in the drawing, and you participate in the bonus point system, you will be awarded a point. When you apply in the draw your accrued points are squared to increase the odds exponentially for the applicants with more accrued points. For example, if you have four base bonus points those will be squared and you will then have 16 bonus points going into the 2018 drawing. All base bonus points accumulate over time until you draw a permit.

I know, it is frustrating. I’ve been putting in for moose in the east Kootenays for 22 years. Still haven’t drawn. I can draw a goat every other year, when they are pretty much guaranteed odds. Lottery definitely has its downfalls, but a point system is going to ruin chances for the younger people getting into hunting. I would hate to see BC turn into something like Utah, where there is 134 years worth of applicants to get drawn for an elk. I think there can be changes made to our lottery system to make it better where our odds can be increased. Check out this link, it is a great explanation of point creep.

The problem with this, is you would be pricing people out of hunting, then it becomes a rich man’s sport. Hunting is something everybody who wants to, should get a chance to do, regardless of financial situation. We need to create more opportunity by getting more animals back on the mountain!

Truly an increase to $30-50 for an application does not price anyone out of hunting for a sheep LEH application. Anyone can afford to spend that much to apply, and certainly some species could be increased over others, still leaving plenty of opportunity for essentially free applications.

Once we know that all fees are going back into the management of wildlife, then we can talk about higher fees.

Increasing fees now is not a good idea. If they are increased now it'll be even tougher to redirect that revenue stream away from the general spending pool.

Once we know that all fees are going back into the management of wildlife, then we can talk about higher fees.

Increasing fees now is not a good idea. If they are increased now it'll be even tougher to redirect that revenue stream away from the general spending pool.

Yes funds should go back to wildlife, but when you look at the amount people spend on gear etc they can spend more on tag and application fees.
Read half the storys and they all have to have a drink after they seem to be able to afford that.
When i use to put in for sheep in Nevada it was $1000 if unsuccessful you got most back except for application fee but still had to put money up front.

So if drawn your tag cost $1000 ? what is fair about that?

Guessing your not familiar with the prices for tags etc for non residents.
Put the money up front gets rid of lots of those that apply just because its something to do.

I'm envious of you guys that pulled the Tat Dall sheep. I've been trying for that tag for 15 years. I hope you all actually hunt it and come back successful.

As for myself, I actually did not put in for 6-29 for the first time in 15 years and I drew 6-20 instead. I don't know that it's all that exceptional an area for sheep but I've been wanting to hunt in there for a while.

Awesome. Seems biggest variable with that draw is making sure you can get a confirmed flight into where you want to hunt. Hopefully you can have a good hunt. I've got a nice ram in my shop that I'm mounting for a guy who hunted there last year.

Back 2002, I believe the odds were 5.5:1 then the government opened up the early draw and if u weren’t successful then you could put in for later more southern draws.
Sure put a lot of extra LEH money into the general revenue.

good for you, I hope you use it and are successful. Last 4 years there has only been a couple sheep taken LEH there, population is a bit down but they are there for sure. The couple taken were by myself and my son. We spent a lot of time out in the field. It’s Been a milder winter up here but lots of ice and rain earlier, hopefully that doesn’t negatively effect there population more. There’s even several collared sheep out there for you too.
