Well, I'm in the poor house now but it was worth it. Picked up my 2018 spring bear from Black Powder Tannery yesterday, they did a great job! Never did stretch him out after skinning him so it takes up quite a bit more room than I originally thought but that's perfectly fine with me :D

Spent this morning putting together a red cedar mount to hang him on, pretty happy with how it turned out. His skull is still degreasing but has a spot on the desk waiting for it when it's all done. Super glad they were able to do such a good job preserving his scars, I'll be posting a video in the near future showing some of the fine details, nothing does it justice like seeing it in person though.

One disappointment is that most of his chest blaze got trimmed away, I probably should have made it clear that i would prefer that staying as opposed to a perfect shape but I'm still new to the whole trophy game and I'm sure my rookie skinning job was no walk in the park to work around. Either way I highly recommend them for any work you need done and I'm happy I could preserve this bear in such a beautiful way, the meat was delicious but it's pretty much gone already...can't think of a better way to remember my first big game harvest, hopefully it marks the beginning of a long and successful lifetime of bowhunting.

Looks awesome. Great idea. Nasty little scar on his face

3 good scars under his left eye, another one under his right eye and another older one on the right side of his muzzle. Oddly enough none on the top of his head or left side of his muzzle, he had claw marks on the top of his skull and left side of his lower jaw...also found some birdshot in the meat. No easy meals out there!

What did that cost?

About 1800, I did consider selling my son into child labor as a hide flesher for a year...all jokes aside though I'm happy I spent the money and I'm certainly not swimming in cash these days. I'm sure a lot of guys regret not getting their first animal mounted especially after they go a couple years eating tag soup, just trying not to think of all the other ways I could have spent that money lol

Nice bear. Good job. What did the bear measure out to??

Wasn't a huge bear, rugged up he's about 5'2 nose to tail...my son says he's taller than me though lol. Only did a rough measurement on a wet skull so far but that was just under 18 squared, teeth were rotten right to the roots. Probably just a pepperoni bear to a lot of guys but he's a real trophy to me!

Looks great...good character

That's one thing I was looking for, aside from some delicious meat of course...wasn't too concerned with size for my first bear but did want one with "character." I remember specifically mentioning face scars or a chest blaze, ended up getting both but most of the blaze was trimmed away for the rug so I guess that part stays between me, the bear and my son. Hope I inspired everyone for spring bear, sorry if the inspiration also included blowing some of your savings! ;)

Nice looking rug. I might have to try that one day (if I win the lotto) I usually just hack off some hair/fur for fly tying (makes great buggy looking stonies)

Thanks for the $ reference.Personally, I'm not a trophy hunter and if I did take an animal that was worthy of trophy status, I don't think I would have it mounted. I guess I would do a Euro mount and hang that in my garage - that's as close as my wife would accept to having taxidermy in the house. I not into spending money on the mounts - the trophy for my is the memory in my mind and the enjoyment of the meat harvested.

My kid, on the other hand, really likes taxidermy and wants a big elk over his bed, bears on the wall and even wants to have a coat made from cougar. $1800 for the bear is going to help put thing into perspective for him - lol.

I can appreciate the drive for trophy class animals and the desire to display them. I really like seeing animals with character features and I like seeing perfect specimens as well.

This bears face is pretty cool looking to me - it has a "tough" male bear look that I like. The beauty scars around the eye add to the appeal. Nice and practical display.

Cool idea. Definitely sounds like a stack and a half but if you put 400 down the day you drop your bear off and put away 50 a week after that it will pretty much be paid for by the time it's done. Sure you could buy a lot of beer and burgers with that but I haven't second guessed this purchase once and usually dropping almost 2 grand would have me counting the other ways I could have spent it for months.

If my son had his way this guy would have been a coat as well, guess the kids are more in touch with their primal roots than us old farts. Better tell the kid to get a part time job though, ideally at a taxidermy studio lol.
