Hello,

My name is Paul and I am a new hunter and living in the Lower Mainland. According to the regulations (I think) the first game I can hunt for this year is coyote. After that I think there is a spring bear hunt starting April. Maybe I should save those questions for another thread.

I don't expect anyone to give away a good spot but can someone point me in the right direction? I was going to ask about the appropriate kind of rifle for coyote but there was already thread on that topic.

Thanks!

hmm welcome to the site...

your best starting point would be join a local club and find a mentour...(theres a lot to it and being safe and succesful)

this will speed up your learning curve..

I'm in the same boat. I'm going to use google earth to find fsr's and set up on the edge of a clear cut. Buy a rabbit distress call and watch your back lol...

Coyotes are mostly around farmland or close to open fields..

I haven't seen any in person or on a trail cam up in the mountains ever.

It wont take much to kill one. If you are only targeting them get a flat shooting rifle caliber like a 22-250 or for a cheaper and just as effective shooting gun use a 223Rem. You most likely will be shooting at a distance in the open for coyotes.

ITs been a few years since I have been to Merrit.
That being said, there was never a shortage of Coyotes around there.
Try above Glimpse Lake/Peter Hope.
At this time of year, depending on the snow, some of the game moves towards the Falkland area of
the Douglas Lake road.
With snow around, that should give you some hints to where coyotes are from the tracks they leave behind.
Lundbom Lake area has them as well.
I suppose you could stop by the Ranch or other ranches in the area for advice.
Some of them may be willing to "help you out", as you would be "helping them out", imo.
Merrit is atleast a reasonable drive from LM to get into them.
Welcome to HBC, and wish you the best of luck!

In all honesty, as a new hunter (or an experienced one) they are the smartest animal to hunt and are called wily for a reason. I am not saying it is impossible but by now most yotes have been "schooled" by every dog hunter with every type of call imaginable..

Good luck, but dont get your hopes too high..

Agree with rocksteady but you gotta start some where and learning an area prior to other hunting opportunities is never a bad thing. Also agree the Merritt area has its share of coyotes up the canyon into region 3 is another option.

Lots of good open areas between Merritt and Kamloops, Nicola valley is loaded with big fat healthy coyotes.

Lots of places close to home with open seasons for wolf and bobcat as well, at $8 you can't really go wrong grabbing a bobcat tag! ;)
