I spent a few days out hunting with friends this week in a place where I spent a lot of time doing pre-season scouting. We all saw several bucks but only managed to drop two for various reasons. We drove ATVs in to the general area and spent the rest of the days hiking, spotting, stalking or still hunting. It took a lot of foot work to be successfull but it paid off in the end.

We had to put this one on a pole to haul it out of the bush to the ATVs do to the rough terrain. I made the shot with my BLR 325 WSM from 50 yards. I laid on my belly with my gun perched on a stump while I waited for him to come out of the bush. Once I had him spotted it only took 2 or 3 min. to come out into full view.

I took my hunting partner down an active trail I had found during the day where this buck had ducked out on us in the morning. We returned at 6 pm and found this guy browsing in the brush at 6:30. He never saw us coming. The shot was made from 20 yards and he ran another 30 into the tree line. We were able to drag him to an opening where we could get him on to the ATV and back to camp.

It is amazing how compact you can make a deer for the ride back to camp

We skinned out both deer at camp under a shelter and let them hang for a few hours before chilling them in a freezer. The weather was very warm and a freezer was our only means to keep them cool while we continued to hunt.

Most bucks we saw still had their velvet with the exception of the guy on the right.

The trip was outstanding say the least. As usual another trip is already in planning.

wow you guys didnt waste any time this season. Have you been back out to the spot where you guys got those 2 black bears in the spring? I was out there a couple times in the summer and didnt see a single buck. Did however see a few bears.

We tried that place on the 1st of Sept and although we hunted it extremly hard for the weekend we got totaly skunked. It was fun anyways though.
