great pics the broomed one with the chunck missing looks like he had some poor growth years unless one is false any of the other side of him to see if rings are the same.

That last guy is a warrior. Looks like his nose might be a little sore. I hope one day I’m lucky enough to hold horns in my hands like that old brute.

No other shots of the chipped ram. He kept his head down feeding for most of the limited shooting time I had, judging from this photo it does indeed look like he had a bad year when he was younger.

I too love that old warrior. He just has gobs of character.

Great pics. For the uninitiated to sheep hunting, which of those rams is legal? All? None? How do you measure the curl to determine a legal shooter?

Depends on what unit you are in. They are all legal in an Any ram LEH zone. None would be legal in a Full Curl zone.

Understatement of the year!

Certainly looks like he was right in the middle of The Prom alright!
And great if he was, decent genetics to pass along.
Awesome pix as usual.

Hey Dana. You always take awesome pictures. I was wondering what do you shoot them with (camera, lenses, tripod, etc) and what’s your distance to the animals you capture?

I am currently shooting a Nikon Coolpix P900 bridge camera. These photos were handheld at distances between 15-40 metres.

Think your going to have to put up a thread you can direct everyone too about the camera if you keep posting up pics:D
Then you can direct them to the link, lol

I ain't a sheep expert by any means but I would say that ram is at least 10. I believe his 2nd year ring would be broomed.

Interesting I have 2 Cali and the CO mentioned some are easy to tell the age and both mine are but this old brute is not so easy I am also guessing 10 but could be 11

Rams around here and Spences grow very large lamb tips. 6" inches some times. The local bio has only seen one ram that has broomed off his second year ( the horn looked more broken then broomed).

The ram in question has only broomed off his lamb tip. 8 countable rings and the missing lamb ring make this ram 9 years old.

Old ram for the area. Not sure why but I have never seen a 10 year plus ram locally even with the mild winters and living in town.

Question, can there be a difference between the actual age of a ram and the legal age of that ram as indicated by the annuli on the horns?
How does one count an annulus or annuli that one can not see and how does one know before the shot that the regional manager's designee will count the same non-visible annulus or annuli???

You should never shoot a ram that does not have eight annuli. The inspectors will only count rings that they can see. If it has seven rings and one is broomed off it gets confiscated. Depending on the bio and his aging technique you may or may not get the ram back. Throw in a false ring and you can really get yourself in trouble.

the counting of rings is meant to harvest old Rams (+10 years), so even with a year broomed or two with a thinhorn, there should still be 8 rings to count. The counting of rings is not meant to be done on a younger sheep that may only be eight years old or with lamb tips. Besides just counting rings one should look at spacing between rings, body shape of the ram, pecking order in the band of Rams, knowing how horns grow in the area you are hunting etc etc. All of these will help with aging a ram.

never shoot based on ring counts unless you have aged and hunted sheep for years. Even then, every year I would bet there are Rams confiscated that were shot by seasoned sheep hunters.

Interesting! Thus why I said I was no sheep expert. I figured a few sheep nuts would give more expertise to the subject.

Dana do you use the manual settings on your camera while taking pictures or just leave it on automatic.
Thanks
