My 11 year old son, Cody, was able to shoot his first deer yesterday evening. It's a nice whitetail doe taken during a youth anterless season. He saw it while hunting with his grandpa. One shot with his grandpa's 30-06 AI.

Troutseeker,
You definitely have it right. The kids are what it's all about. It is an absolute blast hunting with them.

Horshur,
No doubt your Cur Dog was a great asset. Those red leaves can sure hide a blood trail. How's this pic?

Dana

I think I got you guys figured out. Get the kids hunting they fill the freezer with great meat in sept. and the old guys get to hold their tags for a stinky Mule Deer. I think you are on too something:D Get Cody to shoot a mulie buck before November so I can come up and cull a 160 class runt.

BHF,
Just wait until they kill their first deer or bear. The feeling doesn't get any better. Seeing the excitement in their eyes, hearing them tell the story again and again, there is nothing like it. Cody's got a Region 3 muley doe tag for Nov so he'll at least get another deer this year. He also plans on holding his Region 3 muley buck tag for a Big 'Un. He now wants a moose tag. Told him I'll go halfers on the cost as Immy's are pretty rare. Regardless, a good buddy has a big bull draw and Cody and I are going to call for him and film him shooting one with his bow. Should be a blast and probably will get Cody exciting about flinging arrows.

Dana,My wife got her license 2 years ago and last year went 3 for 3 on deer.We have such a good time when we go hunting together and talk about every topic in the world. She loves to gut and skin the deer and is meticulous ,you dont find any hair on the meat and it is clean as a whistle. We are going hunting in October for 10 days and I can hardly wait.My oldest daughter is 9 and has been out with me on a few hunts, she cant believe how much garbage people throw out in the bush I teach her about respecting nature and good hunting ethics ,we all love the meat so this is the truly a family sport.Anyways take care and have a great season. And your right quads suck.

The reason Cody was hunting with his grandpa at the time is grandpa was taking him for a quad ride. ;)

Congrats to the "Family"! As if your kids were't hooked already:cool:.

My kids keep bugging me to take them out. It's hard to believe my son only has 2 years left until he's legal. I'll have to get my act together and start putting more time in scouting deer.

Horshur-Saw your Dad's Cougar rug the other day. Looks great!
Gotta love how deep the hunting tradition runs in your family! Your family is a great example for the rest of us.
