Title says it all. Post any old photos of any animal that was taken in BC. The earlier the better! I have seen some absolute monsters taken here in the 80s and earlier and would love to see what some of you or your relatives have taken in this province. Lets see what you got!

I really wish (and I have looked all over the net for this one) I could find that old photo (like late 1800's early 1900's) of
that Grizzly that was taken, where the bear is sitting up against a tree, on it's ass, and there is a logger/hunter standing
in front of it, right between the legs, and the guy dosent even reach the top of his head to the bears chest!.
(sure, he may have only been 5 ft tall), but impressive Pic!
Think it was a bear taken within 100 miles of Vancouver (pemberton?).
The photo uses to sit on the wall of some outdoor shop here in Vancouver, but cant remember the shops name.
(think you had to walk downstairs, like one of the old "pie cut buildings" you see in Gastown)
Just remember it as a young kid, and always wanted a photo of that.

Good thread, but may have already had one in the past?

Not to hi-jack, but there's a good thread on this topic at Canadiangunnutz.

I believe it's called "Nostalgic Hunting Pictures"

Super cool pics Roots, but I’ve got to ask... don’t the guys in the first pictures of posts 7 and 9 look like the same guys? One supposed to be 1918 and the other 1890s? They don’t look like they’ve aged 28 years! You’d think the Vancouver Archivists would have caught that?

Good luck finding quality wool or leather gear these days! Nobody wants basic anymore. That’s why you can’t get a 4x4 without heated everything and hill descent mode etc etc. Used to be if you wanted to descend a hill, you put your foot on the brakes!

I've always enjoyed reading the story of Bella Twin who killed a huge grizzly with a .22 rifle.

http://threepercenternation.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Bella-Twin-is-shown-with-the-hide-from-the-world-record-grizzly-bear.jpg

I also love the fact that she just kept reloading and shooting until she had no more ammo left. Pretty smart!

Now that photobucket is essentially dead, I'm using Imgur. More of a process now. Upload photos using my phone app but can't seem to figure out how to post from the phone. But posting from my ipad without the app seems to work fine. Can't upload with the idad though. So with two devices it is workable.

There doesn't seem to be the copy BB code option on the app. And outside the app on my ipad, no option to upload. Might be the generation ipad I have. As it is an older one.

I doubt that the first picture in the first post of this thread has anything to do with Vancouver or anywhere else on the lower mainland. Those are all white tail and they did not exist in that area of BC and it would be highly doubtful that that picture would be anywhere in BC for that matter. Whitetail are relative newcomers here.

There are other photos that seem staged. Like the one of the two fellows with the whitetail hung. Guy on the left has a lever gun in hand and a shotgun belt around the waist.

If you want to see historical hunting photos of BC, visit the website of the Provincial Archives, photos. Search the "Hunting" section. I haven't been there for quite a while and they are constantly changing the website so you will most likely have to search diligently to find what you seek.

The idea that whitetails are a newcomer to BC is a made up myth by those that want to eradicate them ie The Fed. Whitetails are the oldest living ungulate in North America and have ranged from Coast to Coast to Coast to Coast. They bred with blacktails to create the mule deer.

"EVOLUTION OF SPECIES

It is a common misunderstanding that blacktail deer are the hybridization of*mule deer and*white tail.Even taxonomists have named the Blacktail as a subspecies of Mule Deer; Odocoileus Hemionus Columbianus. However, mitochondrial DNA testing has revealed that mule deer are actually the product of blacktail bucks breeding whitetail does. According to*theories by prominent environmental scientist*and North American large mammal specialist Valerius Geist,*during the pliocene period, the whitetail deer extended its range down the US' east coast, across what is now Texas and Mexico, and up the west coast, reaching British Columbia and Alaska.*After a retraction of habitat, the whitetail population drew back east, leaving remnant populations along the west coast. The "founders" of these remnant populations carried certain characteristics that allowed them to thrive in their new ecosystem.*Over time, these remnant populations evolved and adapted to their new environments, forming Sitka blacktail in northern BC and Alaska, and the Columbian Blacktail from there southward. This process is described in a theory called "The Founder Effect." Later, the established Blacktail population expanded its territory eastward, as the Whitetail again expanded westward, where they met in the middle. Here, Blacktail bucks*bred Whitetail does and created a hybrid; Mule Deer. The hybrid species took hold of this middle ground, and Blacktail retracted back westward, as Whitetail retracted back eastward. The result is the dispersion of the many deer subspecies that exist In North America today. Similarly, the Coues Deer found in the South West are a result of an isolated *founding subspecies that developed over time in a particular environment."
