View Full Version : Region 3 - Blacktail or Muley Buck?

Roots

Just wanted to share a few pics and ask for help.

I'm a bit confused whether this is a Blacktail or Muley? This guy is from Region 3, didn't have a large white rump patch, and only had a short, non-ropey tail, with only a black tip. Thought I'd ask the more experienced hunters here - thanks guys...

Love those antlers.
Looks like a MD to me.
What a cool looking old buck, I love the way the 4pt side is configured.

I can't say if it's a black tail or not but it is a nice bloody buck

Hybrid?

Body is more like a big blacktail but the headgear is WAAAY too big to be a blacktail.

MD/BT hybrid is very possible in south western 3 where I assume you shot this buck

What I can see in the pic and how you describe the tail/rump a hybrid is likely

This guy is from 3-13. I ditched the car and just quietly walked the roads on foot until I found this guys bedded down with a doe in a clearing about 60 yards. He stood up to take a look, and he got hit in the front of the neck. Took one step, and he was down, and tonight he's venison stroganoff : )

While possible, I sincerely doubt this buck is a hybrid.

... the tail gives it away -- it has a black tip and blacktail has black tail all the way down...

Jelly pointed out the tell-tail.
Between that, antler and body size, I find myself congratulating you on a rather fine Mule Deer.

Cheers,

Have a photo of a Black-tailed doe at Duffy Lake, and another photo of a 5x5 in velvet in the old burn north of Manning Park.
Leave the tail on !
Yours is a Mule deer.

I say mulie. Besides ... its outside the BT boundary anyways.

And that is one hell of a buck. Congrats. Post more pics of that rack when you can. Good mass. Deep forks. That is a shooter for sure.

Good for you. Congrats!

Brown tail with a black tip on this buck and no white rump that does not match MD

Mule deer white tail black tip white rump. Black tail black/dark brown tail no white rump. The buck in ? Is not a perfect match for either

Parts of 3-13 does produce hybrid MD/BT part of this MU was actually dominated by BT but has been pretty much bred out over the years. My grandpa/Dad used to hunt this MU often and watched it transition.

3-16 is another area that has hybrids that was more BT in the past

I don't see any holes in the buck. Can you show us the front of the car please.

We have blacktail like that here in Abbotsford but nothing with that headgear. Wild.

When looking at the last picture; to me it looks like a very stubby, black-tipped white tail - which is like the blacktail we have here. I think his momma was adventurous.

great deer for your zone ! Definitely would be a cross breed. Either way it’s an awesome buck

As in on the walls of peoples homes that were shot far from abbotsford and mission? Ok. Makes sense now.

Blacktail antlers usually point inward. Wish we had a better shot of the rear, as that does look like an odd looking tail for a muley from what I can see. I'll join the it-could-be-a-hybrid camp.

EDIT: Just noticed the last pic... lol rack does point a little inward like a BT. That's funny.

Nice deer, whatever the heck it is :)

Brown tail with a black tip on this buck and no white rump that does not match MD.

You got that from those two pictures?
Must be a lot better / younger eyes than mine.

Would like to see a full on shot of it's back end.

And btw, I have seen many a mulie with the description you suggest is not typical of them.
And a lot of those were in Alberta or Saskatchewan.
Not a lot of blacktails make it over there.

I'll stick with Mulie.

Cheers,
Nog

last pic shows the tail and OP mentions the lack of white rump

Never seen a mule deer without a white rump in BC or Alberta myself and never been to Saskatchewan. Seen enough strange animals I won’t say it’s impossible

We will just have to agree to disagree on this one

Here is as good a shot of a real mainland BT butt as you will get. VERY different than a mulie.

And the plot thickens! j/k

Great thread and great buck. Too bad no great pic of the rear like you said Root's but that's enough footage to show it's one heck of a unique buck. Congrats again.

Do you have a better pic of the ass end?

Mule blacktail hybrids are not rare whatsoever, they are the norm in all mulie and BT transition zones. You certainly get a wide ranging mix of characteristics in these areas. That's a really nice buck, and a real unique rack.

Just looked again with fresh eyes.
Look at the pic of the buck laying behind the vehicle.
Its a black tails, tail!!!its not white with a black tip.
Black tails, tails are white on the underside , so if they flag, it looks white tail-ish
Send in some DNA, I'll bet one person 500bux it's a hybrid.
It's a helluva buck for sure.

Mule for sure. You can just see the edge of the white rump in one of the pics.

Changed my mind. Nice sized BT hybrid, and I love the center fork on it. Very unique deer you got there.

For what it's worth, here's a zoomed in tail from the previous pic, sorry that's the best I got. Wide stubby tail, brown on the backside, with a black tip. Definitely not a ropey tail.

It's got a big body and has a lighter rump patch and a tipped tail. Plus a heavy rack for a vision attack! Whoa! If I knew the road name and the approximate K on the road I could show you why?
