Hmmmmm so my wife and I are headed to Alberta for a hunt.it is a mule deer hunt during the rut.we also have a general open season tag for whitetail bucks.there doesnt seem to be any extra doe tags this year.
We head over in 15th..back for Dec 1.with couple day stop in Edmonton to visit Sister and her familly.
We have the new Ameristep ground blind waterproofed and seam sealed.big buddy heater and a 1 pound propane canister for every day in the ground blind plus a 20# extra for insurance. .lol
Susan has very good quality winter gear..I have R -20 insulation...
I have tried for weeks to get reply from Northern Outfitters regarding Idid a dog mens polar clothing..no reply. .
Going to be a slug of supplies to haul into the hotel..and out while at Edmonton..but dont dare leave anything out in the truck..
My hunter host Springer has been incredibly kind to us and has booked days off work to be there.
I REALLY love whitetail deer hunting..ive been blessed to be able to sit for 10 hours no problem.
It has taken 11 years to establish enough priority to draw this tag.
I have enough for a moose hunt in Alberta next year
I am taking a camera in case a 120 buck gets harvested.
Cheers
Steven

Alberta deer hunting is a blast unfortunately for me work got in the way of my WT hunt

11 years priority to be drawn in the zone your hunting I would assume an awesome zone.

Phil and his son came out this summer for some gold panning..next year hope to have Phil out here to fly fish or maybe offshore TUNA run..thats something Alberta cant supply..lol..the draw apparantly is a wonderful one on the border with Saskatewan/Alberta.
Always the chance we can do a pig hunt while there..we do have a contact. ..hmmmmm

Should be good and you should have lots of opportunities with mature mule deer. Don’t be afraid to knock on doors if you see a nice buck Alberta farmers on average are more open to hunting then BC

Good luck

Some good sized mule bucks out that way! One of the biggest whitetail bucks I've ever seen was a few zones down from there (118 ). Enjoy it. Looking forward to photos and a story!

What's the protocol for CWD and bringing it back to BC? I believe that zone is mandatory head submission, yeah?

srupp
11-06-2018, 05:21 PM
Hmm mandatory head submission. .of course the antlers will be removed..IF big enough it will get dropped off with my friend Marco Pilon head taxidermist, owner, artist extrorinare at Sugar Creek Taxidermy in Red Deer.
No spinal column can be brought back to Bc.we also have to bag the meat. .no consumption till sample left confirms it is free from CWD
My main goal is 200 mule deer..lol
Then big whitetail. .
Then 500 pound wild pig
Then wifes visa bill under $500..lol
Cheers
Steven

Lmao..ya..ya pretty safe to say thats probably beyond my control...
Susan deserves a break from small town BC..and 800 stores under 1 roof
I would think this will be the one primo chance at a mule deer big enough for the wall..
Will do my best..will wear the Swaro binos and spotter down to the coatings.
Cant express my thanks to Phil, his lovely wife Roxanna..their son and the province of Alberta..and the rancher who opened his summer home and entire ranch to a stranger.
And the local who has some suggestions on mule deer. .whitetails..BIG BIG PIGS.

Hey Steven, good luck! It should be a blast.

I’m off for 10 days starting right now. I’ll be hunting about 700k’s directly north of you. Late season bull moose, antlered Muley, antlered Whitetail and 2 supplemental antlerless Whitetail tags... I should be able to find something for the freezer.

Springer will put you on a cranker for sure. Here’s my 2016 Muley from just south of where you are going. I’d set something like this as a minimum...

Still not asleep Fuzzy..damn fine deer.
Hi Chris was chatting with Manny today reguarding his relative with the same last name on front page of Province newspaper making baseball bats..
As per getting hungry..nope not with the list of meals Susan is preparing and the size of the cooler....thanks to you I have learned to text..and seems fitting I send you a text or 2 from deer camp .
As you guys did amazing without my need to shoot anything..it will hopefully be nice to see if my rifle still knows how to go bang in the field .
Actually interested IF a marriage can survive 10 hour days in a ground blind. .I brought DUCK tape to encourage the bride to sit.. just cant see Susan sitting all day.

Headed to where I killed mine back in 2012 and Dad killed his 200" from a few years ago. A bit more central than where you hunted, but next year considering going back to that country when I draw again. I love the rolling prairies and rutting mulies, pretty amazing stuff!

You come back from this hunt with a DINK 120 Buck, and I will personally hunt you down to kick your butt Buddy!!
There are some real Monster Bucks in that area, and 200 inches is really not out of the question!
Study the hell out of as many pictures you can find of bucks that top 180, and DO NOT settle for anything less!
They are there!

Best of Luck my Friend!
I am sincerely looking forward to the report and pictures!

Just wait 6 hours after harvesting him until he’s good and stiff then it’s as simple as a prop-up and stand 8 feet back. Make sure the person on the camera is good at lining your hands up with the antlers...

I have only hunted prairie MD with a bow in Alberta but stalking them was a blast. My hunting was south of Calgary

You are hunting with a rifle so probably don’t need it but crawling with camo netting helped in truly open stalks. In most cases getting close by using the coulee’s is enough

We also had luck waiting in abush first thing in the morning

Strangest buck was taken by my buddy. This deer would bed in an old run down barn and that is where he arrowed it. So don’t overlook any form of cover/wind break with prairie MD

You should have a blast just follow the lead of the locals as you plan to already

PS wear gloves hawthorn sucks

But it’s not quite froze up yet. This pic was taken at about 7:00am. The old Power Wagon on 35’s was sunk to the frame. I’d never have a truck without a winch again. The first two trees yanked right out of the ground but the third held and out she came.

Should be a great hunt Steven and I second Nog’s thoughts on holding out for a good one. I can’t wait to get back down south on another Muley hunt. With all the talk around out of province hunters and limited entry draws the last year I’d treat it as though it may be your last opportunity at an Alberta monster because you never know, it may be. With Springer on your side you’ll be in the right area and you have a great chance at a once in a lifetime buck. Again, good luck!

I did manage to find this ugly little guy the other morning. I bet he didn’t wake up thinking he’d be going for a ride in a Power Wagon that day. He’s not much to look at but he should be good eating.

Conditions up in Muskeg country are pretty bad right now. Plus 2 today and nothing is froze up yet. Even the quads are having a tough time and forget about getting around in a truck.

Rut sure was going strong when we were there last week (especially on the Saturday when it was cold and crisp without wind). Friday we got hammered with snow/wind and it kept the movement down in the morning, but once it cleared and the sun came out, was pretty cool watching all the activity and mulies chasing in the river valleys.

Once again thank you Phil, Nathan, and Kelvin..our very generous landowner Doug..Bless his heart..Amazing generosity.
And ESPECIALLY to my first wife Susan..for accompanying me, doing most all the work..making Phils travel trailer home..and even jeopardizing her health by assisting with deer cleaning chores..even though Susan is allergic to deer " dander " hair...

Will start the recollection in short order..

I chat with Steve on the phone from time to time.
His health is not well Ladz.
As a consequence, he isn't around here too much, and certainly not up to crafting a hunting tale of late.

In our last conversation he did note the Mulie he collected in Alberta tested positive for CWD and that he was handing all of it over to the CO's for proper disposal.

Cross your fingers for him, and send good thoughts his direction.
Once he gets better, I hope he will once again be up to sharing his tales with us all once again.
