Well I didn't get my monster , he was 20 feet from me and i couldn't get a shot , and then he just vanished into the fog and snow , so it has been 3 years in a row that i have missed him . On Friday morning on are way in we saw five 4-pointers , two of them were really good shooters just things just didn't work out , was pretty dead from the hike in , it's a hard one . That evening we were out glassing and I spotted a nice 4 point , really high tines , nice high rack ,but not the biggest spread , good mass . So my buddy that i was hunting with hasn't shot a big buck yet so I asked him if he wanted that one and of course he said yes, so we moved in as close as we could until he spotted us , it was really open country , so i said to him it's a very long shot if you feel confident then shoot . He set up for the shot while i covered him just in case he missed because i would have shot him too . Well my buddy took the shot and dropped him , now i have taken some far shots in my day but this was the farthest shot i have seen , we estimate 600 yards with his 300 mag , it was just a sick shot but i was really happy for him , it was his first big buck . We scored it when we got home and it scored 174 , one of the fattest deer i have seen .It took all morning to pack him out thats why i didn't stay for my monster , it's just to far in for 2 bucks but I'm glad he got his first . I just love the alpine and love hunting I'm glad i was part of this . Here are some photo's that i got .http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/ColinFire/RodAndColinsDeerHunt007.jpghttp://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/ColinFire/RodAndColinsDeerHunt003.jpghttp://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/ColinFire/RodAndColinsDeerHunt009.jpg

Some great looking highcountry and a great highcountry buck to boot. Way to go! Were many of the bucks you saw hard-horned? I haven't seen anything rubbed yet.

Really green around here too. I've been seeing some incredible antler growth this year. Got my son in on another whopper typical this morning. Solid 180+. Just a split second too fast for us. Not used to them not giving a second look this early in the season, but we cut several sets of fresh lion tracks, so I suppose he's got a reason to bail.

I'm focusing this year on trying to get my son a deer. He keeps on passing up on the little guys so I figured I better show him some bucks that would get his heart a racin'. :)

nice buck, great looking area,, lots of hard work doe's produce the big ones. funny thing i noteice is how everone wants to know where you go, hoping maybe if they go there they will get a big one too:confused:, when my hunting buddy and i got two 5x5's in 2002, everone wanted to know where we went, :???:i said if i took you by the hand and showed you the spot, you probley would never see another buck close to there, even telling the area we went, there are millions of arcers around there and you could find a big buck if you leave your truck and walk abit and look, as we did, you will find one some place,, good luck.

nice work guys, nice to see some big buck's going to the dinner table..

Sweet alpine buck - gotta love when all the hard work comes together. Do you have a rough idea of what your deer weighed for the hike out?

600 yards? Thats an insane shot alright... does he practice at that distance?

Nice buck, deep forks. 174 gross or net? Congrats to your friend, a very fine animal

Nice buck!

Out of curiosity, what kind of hold at 600 yds?

I would think it must be 60+".....pretty difficult shot..

We were on a pretty big slope so all he could do is lay it off his knee and shoulder off the hill side , Through his scope he aimed about a foot over his back and dropped him one shot , i didn't even have to throw lead in the air . Next year i will borrow my buddies yardage pro and measure , but i would say 600+ .

After he was down i was kinda thinking to my self why did i let him take it and not me ,but as long as i'm a part of it thats all that matters to me , it was a really good hunting trip , a little short but really fun . I think everyone is gonna have a really good year , it seems that there feed is in great amounts at this time of the season so your going to see some big bucks . The 2 bigger ones that we saw just makes ya wanna go back for more .
