My good friend Barry and I managed to kill two 6X6 bull elk in two days. Barrys bull came in silently to our locator bugle on the 5th and he made a great shot @ 315 yards. My bull was shot yesterday morning @ 9:40am and by the time we got him back to the truck it was 7:00pm. He was a runner so every time we tried to move in and call to him he would take off. What we did was set Barry up in a spot that the bull didn't feel threatened by our calls. Barry just stayed put and kept mixing the cow calls with the occassional bugle. This kept the bulls bugleing while I moved in on the two biggest sounding. Barry's calling really got them riled up and pretty soon the bulls were moving towards each other. I got the wind right and moved in between them. I was with in 150 yards of both bulls but the cover in the bottom of the creek was very thick and wet so the chances of seeing the bulls before they winded me where slim if I waited so I had to decide which bull to go after. The bull on my left was in the really thick swamp spruce while the bull on the right was up on the hill in the big poplar trees. I slowly headed towards the bull on the hill. I could hear him raking his antlers on a tree so I pushed my way out of the little spruce trees that lined the creek and began glassing the hill for him. At first I couldn't spot him but he bugled every couple of minutes so I soon pin pointed his location and moved in alittle closer for a better look. He looked like a good 5X6 and I decided that if given the opportunity I would take him. He stood in the same spot and rubbed a tree for quite a while and I could see that every time that he rubbed the tree he would close his eyes. Using this to my advantage I slowly made my way to within 70 yards. He lifted his head and gave a bugle complete with chuckles and came storming closer. He was coming straight at me and @ 24 yrds he went into the only willow patch on the hill and began to destroy them. I had no shot so I knelt down and ranged some trees around him. Some how he must have gotten an arrant breeze because he troted directly away from me. He turned broad side at 50 yards but he was to tight to a tree for a shot so I let down. He cleared the tree and moved ten yards farther when the other bull cut lose with a bugle 1oo yards away. He was quartering away @ 60yards and just about to bugle when I relesed the arrow that punctured both lungs and buried itself in his off shoulder. He staggerd 60-70 yards and went rolling down the hill. I let out a whoop and went and got Barry. Turned out that he had a another 1.5 inch point on his right side making him a 6X6.
2 bulls in 2 days awesome. We also managed to kill two bulls last year so we are on a roll.
