22 size is nice, buy the best you can afford. Stop in at a butcher shop sometimes they know someone with a used one, thats where I got my first unit (US Berkel).
I now have a cabelas unit as it is a bit lighter and easier to move around.

If you are doing more than one deer, or even just one deer worth of grind get a big grinder. The small ones from your local CT or London Drugs are all right for doing small amounts. If you are grinding 40-50lbs or more a small grinder is too slow and your meat starts warming up.

I have had several small small grinders over the years. A handful of years ago I picked up a 1HP Cabelas Carnivore. Much faster and equally as important when you are doing your cutting and wrapping in a small enclosed space is that a larger commercial quality grinder is much quieter.

Weston #8 electric meat grinder works great for us. 3/4 HP grinds a whole deer no problem and makes sausage with the attachments.
Paid $232.99+tax at local hunting store.

Anybody use the Kitchener# 12 from Princess Auto?...sells for about $169. All metal gears.I won’t be using it much, maybe once a year for a couple of deer or a moose and laying out $ 5 or $600 for a meat grinder is pretty steep

I recently bought the Cabela's Pro on sale for $100 off regular price. Ground up and made sausage with 30lbs of venison/pork mix. No problems what so ever and clean-up was easy - no tough to clean areas. I expect many happy sausage seasons to follow. I think they might still be on sale.

Absolutely! Looked at them once on line and wanted it but didn't want to pay full price.........about 2 months later a Cabella's card shows up in the snail mail box with the same unit for 100 bucks cheaper (how does that work???:?) ......took it as a sign it was meant to be, bought it and never looked back. Fast and easy to clean up, attachments for processing included.

I have run the Cabelas 1hp for 10 years without a hiccup. moose, deer, elk, fish etc. have never slowed it down.

One thing to consider is the neck size. The 1hp comes with a #22. Smaller grinders will have a smaller neck, which means you will spend more time cutting your meat into smaller chunks to get it to fit the neck.

To maximize whatever grinder you have, remove all tendons, silver skin, fat and gristle and semi freeze your meat as it will go through the grinder better, will keep the grinder and cutter cooler, which will allow any fats to move through better and not be "cooked" by the heat of the grinder.

Cheers

Oh man, I've been using a hand grinder all these years. I still break a sweat grinding a moose up.

Kind of slow, eh? Been there, done that for years. Today's grinders work really well and I'm so happy I got one. Even the wife was happy with the purchase once we started making venison.

Funny, you don’t see them coming up on the used market often..and I doubt the average hunter is going to put much use on them so there should be some good stuff out there .The heavy duty ones don’t wear out

You just have keep watching, I looked on Craigslist for about 6 months before I found a decent one, damn thing is older than I am. It came out of a butcher shop in Kerrisdale that closed 20 years ago and sat in storage since. Good ones don’t come up often, just need some patience. Good luck

I had a Berkel listed 2 years ago and it took months to sell. I sold it for 450, it was 35years old and worked like it was new. They cost 3500-4000 US new. Most people look at the cheep ones and try to compare. In the end the buyer was happy and had a hell of a grinder. Only reason I sold was that it weighed over 100lbs and the back didnt like it when I had to move it from the pantry to the counter.
