Got this 5X5 on Saturday afternoon. Bugled him in to 50 meters and shot him through the lungs
with the .338 Win Mag. Still ran for some 200 meters before dying.
Man those elk are tough!!

To close for that rifle, Maybe , like some guys on here think that maybe you need a bigger gun !!! LOL.
The magnum rifle was developed for shooting out past 500 yards. I have taken all my elk with a 30/06 with no problems with them running more that 30 yards !! My grandson has taken elk with his 6.5x55 at 200 yard plus with no problems at all, run maybe 50 yards at the most !!!

If you had any idea of how many animals he has shot, his trophy room alone would be a museum to many.
Yesterday he opened his gun locker, perused $1000’s of guns and chose his .338 Win mag.
Why,when likely a .223 in the eye from that distance might work? Because he can.
Some of us just like guns, tend to use about 3 a season myself
Great share, Great Elk

Very nice elk , how long did you engage with him before he showed ... this I find is the most exciting during Sept.. was he sounding off before you called or did you get him going ... nice one !!!!

Seriously.... this this why people don’t post their hunts anymore.
If a 338wm is not a elk caliber PLEASE tell us what is then.
I would take a 338 for elk over a 30-06 any day.

Gorgeous animal. Congrats sir.
Have a good rest of the season... pressures off

All of his elk that he probably never posted .... lol.

The fact that his statement starts with "the magnum rifle was developed for" makes me roll my eyes right there

I think what my father was trying to say was that maybe the heavy bullet from the 338 didn't perform as it should have due to being a 50yd shot.

Ya your right. People posting negative comments is why people are hesitant to post stories/pics but the responses by yourself and twosevenO could also be reason for others to not post.

I really dont want to add to the derailing of this thread but come on, man ... the whole post was implying magnums arent necessary to shoot a moose and bigger isnt always better etc.

Anyways .... congrats again to the OP on a great elk. Well done.

If I lived up north and hunted in Africa on occasion, I'd own a 338 win mag too! :)

Based on the one I have shot and the many tales from others of how elk suck up lead and walk, there is no other animal except maybe a grizz that I feel stronger about "SHOOT TIL ITS DOWN" than an elk!!!!!

ps great work getting er done

Lol no shocker, that elk had the body of a Yukon moose. seriously the largest bodied bull rocky mtn elk I have ever seen. maybe next time use the 6.5 creedmore, I hear they kill better than any magnum;)

years ago I went from moose to elk the first one I split I keep looking at my axe as moose were easy . Some go straight down or just stand there and die while others just go till out of blood .

I often use my BSA .300 Win Mag and every year I take flack for having too much gun... Oh well, that's life, it's not going to stop me from using it ... As said already, some drop on the spot and some run until there is no blood left..
