With the opening of the Cdn goose season on Van Is, just a friendly reminder that the Vancouver Island University nonmigratory Canada goose study continues. Hunters are asked to report collared geese harvested or spotted to the VIU Canada Goose Project web site. There is a brief questionnaire to complete. Four hundred nonmigratory Canada geese have been banded (silver metallic leg bands) and large, readily identifiable, white collars with alphanumeric codes have been placed around their necks. The codes are printed in contrasting black numbers followed by the capital letter P. The codes range from 000P - 199P (for 2016) and 201-400P (for 2017). There are images of collared geese on the VIU site. Collared geese with different codes and/or collar colours, should be reported via a Canadian Wildlife Service web link to the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory.
