Hello!

I'm hoping to get my first elk. I won the slot between october 10th to 20th. I'm thinking about taking a mountain bike, but to be honest I'm not really sure what the terrain will look like. We will be landing with a 16' aluminum boat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated for what is probably a once in a lifetime draw.

Thanks so much! Any tips leading up to a successful hunt will be met with much (good) homemade wine.

There are logging roads. As of a couple years ago they were mostly overgrown. So, unless there has been recent logging you will likely be on foot so I'd leave the bikes at home.

Logged in there around 10years ago. At that time we only reactivated the old roads a little ways from the beach Valley beyond was quite overgrown. Unless access has improved dont think bike will be of any use.

Did see elk on the estuary though so they're there. Did see Griz up higher too.

Good luck.

As of a couple years ago roads were good til 3k. Go another few km back into the avi chutes. That’s where the big guys are. Only bull I’ve seen from there was a measly 9x8 that grossed over 360.

How does one pack an entire elk out on a mountain bike?

I believe that there is active logging in there

Thanks again for the tips. We are going to rent a quad, something I've never taken hunting, but seems pretty key to this hunt.

Hopefully I have some pictures to post. Leaving this Monday, so stoked!

How does one pack an entire elk out on a mountain bike? Same way as a guy hunting on foot. Multiple trips in pieces.

Oh I hunt blacktails with a bike and I built a little trailor from a kit that has a rubbermade in it. Works pretty good! can bike a whole blacktail back to camp no problems

Good Luck on your hunt. Hope the weather holds for you. We also have a elk draw McNab Creek, same deal, boat in and quads etc. What do you have for camping? Wall tent or??

Bought a beckel canvas eena tt 14' tent. Used it on one trip and I'm in love. Take literally 10-15 minutes for one guy to set up and is a palace for 3.

I'm spoiled now on wall tents. A woodstove makes everything so much better...!

Well we made it back! Thanks to everyone who gave some info. As it turns out the road has been worked on extensively the last year and we had a clear 10km to work with. It was dense and hard to hunt. The elk weren't calling, and it quickly turned into a 'cover as much ground as possible and bump and shoot' operation. We managed to get a little spiker...

I am blown away at the size of this thing. The antlers are getting boiled down right now for euro mount, and they just dwarf my buddies big 6 point rocky mountain elk mounts. It's quite mindboggling how big these creatures are.

Was a crazy hunt. Logistically difficult with a quad and a boat, really thick in there and not very huntable. I feel quite fortunate to have seen this guy slipping through the timber before heading into the thick and nasty.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Beautiful bull. Like you said, very fortunate to pull that guy out of there, I know of many that have been skunked with that tag. Amazing how big the bulls get in the coastal inlets!

I'm going to try to age him for a month. I expect some tough eats ! But I definitely do have a bit of a freezer space problem at the moment... maybe I should reconsider my 3 upcoming deer hunts...
