Just going through the regulations. I from VI but have a place on Ruth lake. I'm looking at heading up around September 15th for a a week. Are the deer numbers that low that the bag limit needs to be 1 and 4 point or better?
Also no WT hunting unless you are a youth and now only?
Makes me wonder if I should even bother planning a solo hunting trip?

Mule deer has always been 4 point or better until Oct 1
White tail bucks open for anybody Sept. 10 to Nov. 30
Don't know where your getting youth only?

Take a closer look at the regs. Not too many places on the mainland where it's not 4pt until October.

Okay took another look at regulations. I apologize for not taking a longer look at the regs before posting my comment. Makes sense now.
Guess that's why I read the regs from front to back many times because I seem to learn something new every time!

The answer is yes....unless you have a rancher buddy with alfalfa fields. I've given up on 5-1 for the most part.

Oh well it's always good to be at the cabin fishing and chopping wood bagging a deer will be a bonus!

I wouldn’t give up on 5-1 that easy. I got this guy in late October 2016

Beauty man! Would to drop a buck that size! Again I'm going to go. My dad knows lots of good spots around Ruth lake so I'm going to go and give it a shot!

Sept 15-oct 3 is the best time to find a deer in 5-1, saw lots of mule deer, and a few whitetail, the last few years,it gets harder after oct 1, they migrate south, there’s still resident deer that stick around but no we’re near as many after the first week in October.

Thanks for the information. Have you done any hunting around Ruth lake and if so is there much grizzly sign around? My brother is up at the cabin right now and he said he has seen lots of deer few black bear but zero signs of grizzly.

Isnt ruth lake area 5-2? Not sure what's gonna be left to hunt in around there with a fire blazing in the area. Evacuations occurring now....

I could be mistaken if the MU 5-1 as it shows 100 mile in 5-1 but maybe Ruth lake is MU 5-2. Where abouts are the fires burning? Hopefully not too close to Ruth lake

All of the 500 rd is getting evacd...so Wilcox etc all the way through to basically the other end in LLH Murphy lake area. The fire is around lang lake and schoolhouse park. Ruth is currently ok.

Not too much you can access from Ruth lake.

Except for some back trails... closest area is the 500 road. But lots of areas to explore up there ( bring a bear tag) Though I didn’t see many deer up there last fall.
Side note:
I’ve always wondered if deer island held deer in the fall. Seen them swim across the lake lots.....

It’s worth the trip
