Don't know about hunting opportunities, but many of my winter backcountry ski touring trips are staged out of Golden or Donald, just west of Golden. It can be an issue getting in/out both west & east during the winter due to highway closures. South exit is usually ok. You're not that far north of some fine elk hunting methinks... sheep too if you get a draw?
