U.S. House approves bill to allow killing sea lions

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House passed a bill Tuesday that would allow tribal managers and government fish managers to kill limited numbers of sea lions in the Columbia River to improve the survival of endangered salmon and steelhead populations.

The legislation passed by a vote of 288 to 116.

Under the bill, designated officials would be able to remove some California and Stellar sea lions from specific areas where they are posing the most harm to endangered native fish runs.

The bill is sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., and U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-Ore.

“For the salmon and steelhead fighting to make it upstream, today’s vote in the U.S. House significantly improves their chances of survival," Beutler said after passage of the bill.

"The passage of my bipartisan bill signals a return to a healthy, balanced Columbia River ecosystem by reining in the unnatural, overcrowded sea lion population that is indiscriminately decimating our fish runs."

Beutler said supporters of the bill are "not anti-sea lion," adding, "We’re just for protecting a Pacific Northwest treasure - salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and other native fish species iconic to our region."

A companion bill is moving through the U.S. Senate now, sponsored by U.S. Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, and U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.

Joe Stohr, acting director of the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife, supported the passage of the bill.

“We appreciate today’s action by the House of Representatives and the efforts of Representatives Herrera Beutler and Schrader to secure the bill’s passage. Sea lion predation on salmon is a complex issue, and we thank them for recognizing the need for action to help recover threatened and endangered populations in the Columbia River.”

We do, and they are.
Something is in the works Dennis, and I will be pleased to be posting about that in the not-too-distant future.

Sea Lions are beloved by all and very important to the ecosystem yet are REALLY overdoing it in the area.... Each one eats SO much of the fishes! Time for folks to take some out of the waters. Both as the return of an historically classic Hunt and as an excellent source many have yet to enjoy, all while benefiting fishes and the water life in the Pacific Ocean. Excellent!

Well hope the Washington Govt has influenced our Federal Govt..This predator reduction is and should be utilized by DFO as a responsible management tool not as a viscous cull ..Salmon need saving ...just like they sacrificed moose for caribou so should they sacrifice sea lions for salmon..As far as whats in the works ....Should they decide to go this way and proceed with a cull you bet the antis will be reporting about this decision if it comes..Hopefully common sense prevails..Thanks NOG....Dennis

It would be a good first step if it came to Canada but the powers that be would rather just blame us fishermen for the decline. I doubt the greens would allow any sort of sea mammal to be killed.

Pretty easy even for those with blinders to reality on to determine they are discussing one hell of a lot more than the 900 sea lions mentioned in the initial discussion:

Tens of thousands of seals in the Salish Sea are devouring millions of adult and juvenile salmon, sparking renewed debate about culling the furry predators.
Recent studies have linked high seal-population density to troubled chinook runs and the decline of southern resident killer whales (https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/hungry-salish-sea-seals-and-sea-lions-devouring-resident-orcas-favourite-food) that feed on chinook in the summer.

Wild Chinook salmon productivity is negatively related to seal density, and not related to hatchery releases in the Pacific Northwest

Remember 20-odd years ago there was much consternation because there was a bloody sea lion hanging around the Ballard Locks in Seattle and gobbling up the few remaining Steelhead from a decimated run that were trying to return to spawn? The local latte-quaffing urban enviro-weenies didn't want them to shoot the sea lion and now that Steelhead run is extinct.

... The local latte-quaffing urban enviro-weenies didn't want them to shoot the sea lion and now that Steelhead run is extinct.

Extrapolate that coast wide.
Given their grossly overpopulated numbers, the collapse of coast-wide fisheries is damn near a forgone conclusion should we not see past the "enviro-weenies" ignorant-of-fact objections. :(
